In the 1980s the Queen Charlotte Islands captured world-wide attention. Environmentalists struggled to preserve this fragile area from becoming a wasteland as the Haida - the Islands' First People - fought to save their unique heritage. This double-barrelled struggle made headlines repeatedly in every newspaper in the western world. What newspaper accounts and lobby groups could not provide us with was an understanding of the Islands' remarkable place in the history and mythology of the Northwest Coast. The Queen Charlotte Islands may possess a European history older than any Spanish settlement in California, or any similar Russian site south of Bering Strait. Anyone concerned with the preservation of the unique qualities of the Queen Charlotte Islands should acquaint themselves with the Islands' long and colourful story. Until now there has been no book that introduced friend and stranger alike to the world that is the Queen Charlotte Islands. The Ghostland People is that introduction, a story every curious person will want to read. |
