In the Shadow of the Sun: Perspectives on Contemporary Native Art In 1987 artists and curators across Canada, in collaboration with Gerhard Hoffmann of the University of Würzburg, brought together "In the Shadow of the Sun", the first major retrospective of contemporary Canadian Native art.

It opened in Germany, then came to Canada the following year. This is a collection of essays from Native artists, scholars and curators. They provide an overview of the development of Native art in Canada and discuss regional styles as well as the style of individual artists. as well, they examine the variety of subject matter, techniques and themes shown in the works.

A large portion (200+ pages) is devoted to Inuit art.

The book is illustrated with the work of the artists in the exhibition as well as numerous black and white photos, many of them archival.
