The Knowledge and Usage of Marine Invertebrates by the Skidegate Haida People of the Queen Charlotte Islands

David W. Ellis & Solomon Wilson
Trisha Gessler (Ed.)
This paper focuses on the utilization and categorization of marine invertebrates by the Skidegate Haida people. Each creature is given its common English name, its Latin name and Haida name, followed by any legends associated with it. Many of the descriptions include in depth preparation and, where applicable, preservation methods.

Mr. Wilson, a Haida man born in 1887, shared his considerable knowledge with Ellis and the resulting book makes a most interesting read.

It includes numerous references, 5 appendices and an index, and a fascinating short piece, "Species said to have 'Decended' from One Another."
