This article is in the Annual Report of the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institution showing the Operations, Expenditures, and Condition of the Institution for the Year Ending June 30, 1939. Barbeau describes totems and the myths attached to their figures. He speculates on the age of poles and the possibility that other Pacific Rim cultures, with similar carvings, came into contact with Northwest Coast peoples and shared introduced the idea of totem poles.
