Jewitt and a sailmaker named Thompson survived an 1803 misadventure with Chief Maquina's people on Vancouver Island. For 28 months they were kept as labouring captives. Jewitt adapted to some degree (Thompson did not like any aspect of Native life) and managed to keep a journal. They were eventually rescued and numerous versions of Jewitt's story have appeared.
