In the late 1970s, reading research had become a true interdisciplinary endeavour with flavours of anthropology, artificial intelligence, cognitive psychology, educational psychology, linguistics, neuroscience and instructional technology. Given appropriate integration, results from these diverse perspectives can enhance our understanding of reading behaviour tremendously, both in its acquisition and in its skilled functioning. Thus, the enthusiasm for such interdisciplinary interaction had been quite intense for some time. In the years before publication, the National Reading Conference had been doing everything possible to accelerate this interaction. Originally published in 1981, the chapters in this book are the fruits of that effort. The research focuses on specifying skills in identifying alphabetical elements and the rules that govern their combination, on constructing models that characterize the recognition of individual words and the interpretation of texts, and on discovering what factors are responsible for blocking the normal acquisition process in many children. Chapters 2 to 12 of this book reflect these changing foci. They are nevertheless sandwiched by two chapters that deal with the historical background and future outlook of reading instruction.

It’s 1829 and Dr. William Whitcraft has his hands full. When he's not trying to dream up a cure for hysteria—the scourge of London's polite society—he juggles a busy medical practice, a lovely but demanding fiancée, an over-enthusiastic patient seeking his affections, and the emergence of an ominous rivalry with a dashing fellow professional. Not to mention a secret dalliance of his own with a locally famous procuress. The Five Step Plan is a light-hearted farce, illuminating the hypocritical world of 19th century English society, where one must navigate the bounds of propriety, while mastering the art of clandestine intrigue.

Columbus, Ohio, "an odd amalgam of the planned and the spontaneous," was founded on the banks of the Scioto River in 1812 as the new seat of this young state's government. Located in the wilderness of central Ohio, nearly equidistant to the "real" cities of Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Toledo, Columbus experienced 100 years of unprecedented growth from which it would emerge the state's capital in more than title alone. Today, it is Ohio's largest city. Forgotten Columbus features many people, places, and events that defined this burgeoning 19th and early-20th century city. And above all, the places--from the Old Ohio Penitentiary, to Fort Hayes, to the recently revitalized Brewery District--which either no longer exist, or have changed so dramatically over the years that they are barely recognizable. Residents and visitors alike will find this a fascinating, insightful, and at times surprising look back at a forgotten era in Columbus's history.
