Intelligent Systems involve a large class of systems which posses human-like capabilities such as learning, observation, perception, interpretation, reasoning under uncertainty, planning in known and unknown environments, decision making, and control action. The field of intelligent systems is actually a new interdisciplinary field which is the outcome of the interaction, cooperation and synergetic merging of classical fields such as system theory, control theory, artificial intelligence, information theory, operational research, soft computing, communications, linguistic theory, and others. Integrated intelligent decision and control systems involve three primary hierarchical levels, namely organization, coordination and execution levels. As we proceed from the be performed organization to the execution level, the precision about the jobs to increases and accordingly the intelligence required for these jobs decreases. This is in compliance with the principle of increasing precision with decreasing intelligence (IPOI) known from the management field and theoretically established by Saridis using information theory concepts. This book is concerned with intelligent systems and techniques and gives emphasis on the computational and processing issues. Control issues are not included here. The contributions of the book are presented in four parts as follows.

Natural language generation (NLG) is a subfield of natural language processing (NLP) that is often characterized as the study of automatically converting non-linguistic representations (e.g., from databases or other knowledge sources) into coherent natural language text. In recent years the field has evolved substantially. Perhaps the most important new development is the current emphasis on data-oriented methods and empirical evaluation. Progress in related areas such as machine translation, dialogue system design and automatic text summarization and the resulting awareness of the importance of language generation, the increasing availability of suitable corpora in recent years, and the organization of shared tasks for NLG, where different teams of researchers develop and evaluate their algorithms on a shared, held out data set have had a considerable impact on the field, and this book offers the first comprehensive overview of recent empirically oriented NLG research.

The past is narrated in retrospect. Historians can either capitalize on the benefit of hindsight and give their narratives a strongly teleological design or they may try to render the past as it was experienced by historical agents and contemporaries. This book explores the fundamental tension between experience and teleology in major works of Greek and Roman historiography, biography and autobiography. The combination of theoretical reflections with close readings yields a new, often surprising assessment of the history of ancient historiography as well as a deeper understanding of such authors as Thucydides, Tacitus and Augustine. While much recent work has focused on how ancient historians use emplotment to generate historical meaning, Experience and Teleology in Ancient Historiography offers a new approach to narrative form as a mode of coming to grips with time.

This book presents an extended dialogue in essay form between specialists in the work of Moses Mendelssohn, and experts in important trends in related late-seventeenth and eighteenth century thought. The first group of contributors explores themes in Mendelssohn’s metaphysics and aesthetics, presenting both their internal argumentative coherence and their historical context. The second outlines the context of Mendelssohn’s views on specific topics, and describes his contribution to the discussion of them. The essays are organized in four sections. The first pairs two essays on Mendelssohn’s theory of language and writing. The second section offers three essays addressing a number of topics in Mathematics and philosophy in Mendelssohn. A group of eight essays follows, dealing with Metaphysics in a historical context. The fourth section presents five essays discussing Mendelssohn’s Aesthetics in a historical context. Moses Mendelssohn’s Metaphysics and Aesthetics arises from a conference held in Amsterdam in 2009, which gathered numerous authorities to address the central theme. Taken together, these eighteen essays present a sophisticated portrait of Mendelssohn, packed with detail and rich in complexity.

In the last fifty years the world has been completely transformed through the use of IT. We have now reached a new inflection point. This book presents, for the first time, how in-memory data management is changing the way businesses are run. Today, enterprise data is split into separate databases for performance reasons. Multi-core CPUs, large main memories, cloud computing and powerful mobile devices are serving as the foundation for the transition of enterprises away from this restrictive model. This book provides the technical foundation for processing combined transactional and analytical operations in the same database. In the year since we published the first edition of this book, the performance gains enabled by the use of in-memory technology in enterprise applications has truly marked an inflection point in the market. The new content in this second edition focuses on the development of these in-memory enterprise applications, showing how they leverage the capabilities of in-memory technology. The book is intended for university students, IT-professionals and IT-managers, but also for senior management who wish to create new business processes.

The 2010 Workshop on Trends in Enterprise Architecture Research (TEAR), held in Delft, The Netherlands, was the ?fth one in an increasingly successful series of workshops, previously held in Hong Kong, Switzerland, Australia and Sweden. This year we received 15 papers. After an extensive review process by a distinguished international Program Committee, with each paper receiving at least three reviews, we accepted the 7 papers that appear in these proceedings. Congratulations to the successful authors The discipline of enterprise architecture is commonly considered to have its birthinanacademicarticlebyJohnZachmanpublishedbytheresearch-oriented IBM Systems Journal. The growth of the discipline, however, took place mainly in the practitioner s cradle. In recent years, the industrial and governmental - terestinenterprisearchitecturehasincreaseddramatically.Meanwhile, therehas been steady academic work in the area, but research on enterprise architecture has been taking place in relatively isolated communities. The main objective of this workshop was to bring these di?erent communities of EA researchers - gether and to identify trends andmajor researchchallengesin EA research. This workshopprovided a discussion forum where researchersand practitionerscould meet and exchange experiences, problems and ideas related to EA. ThepaperbyVasilisBoucharas, MarliesvanSteenbergen, SlingerJansen, and Sjaak Brinkkemper concerns a literature survey on the potential contribution of enterprise architecture to the achievement of business goals, while the paper by UlrikFranke, MathiasEkstedt, RobertLagerstrom ], JanSaatandRobertWinter complements this from a more practical perspective by providing a survey on the usage of enterprise architecture in practice.

Brazil's insertion into the World Trade Organization (WTO) has stimulated economic growth, as the country has been benefiting from lower trade barriers. The country has accepted the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) - Annex 1C of the WTO agreement - which sets out minimum standards of protection for Intellectual Property (IP) rights. Law No. 9,279, of May 14, 1996 was enacted to comply with TRIPS, suppressed restrictions to patentable subject matter, allowing patents in the pharmaceutical field. The granting of compulsory licenses as one of the flexibilities to patent rights provided in TRIPS and in the Brazilian law plays an important role in the governmental program of free distribution of drugs for the treatment of AIDS, evidencing the complex relationship between private and public interests. This study has been conducted with use of bibliographical method, providing for an analysis of the Brazilian patent law within the framework provided by TRIPS. The provisions on patents in the pharmaceutical area and compulsory license have been chosen to serve as the main driver for such analysis. Viviane Yumy Mitsuuchi Kunisawa is a Brazilian attorney specialized in IP Law.
