Philosophical materialism in all its forms – from scientific naturalism to Deleuzian New Materialism – has failed to meet the key theoretical and political challenges of the modern world. This is the burden of philosopher Slavoj Žižek’s argument in this pathbreaking and eclectic new work. Recent history has seen developments such as quantum physics and Freudian psychoanalysis, not to speak of the failure of twentieth-century communism, shake our understanding of existence. In the process, the dominant tradition in Western philosophy lost its moorings. To bring materialism up to date, Žižek – himself a committed materialist and communist – proposes a radical revision of our intellectual heritage. He argues that dialectical materialism is the only true philosophical inheritor of what Hegel designated the “speculative” approach in thought. Absolute Recoil is a startling reformulation of the basis and possibilities of contemporary philosophy. While focusing on how to overcome the transcendental approach without regressing to naïve, pre-Kantian realism, Žižek offers a series of excursions into today’s political, artistic, and ideological landscape, from Arnold Schoenberg’s music to the films of Ernst Lubitsch.

Chabal and Daloz's argument is one based on an analysis of culture understood as a system of meanings rather than as values. Hence, the authors offer a methodology that grounds political analysis in the interpretation of what 'makes sense' to the people concerned. Their approach, which resists the tyranny of particularisms but instead proposes a different 'scientific' method, draws upon a wide range of political, sociological and anthropological sources. It demonstrates how an interpretative framework can be heuristically fruitful in the study of politics. Chabal and Daloz illustrate the analytical acuity of this method with a comparative study of the state and political representation in three very different settings: France, Nigeria and Sweden.

Erik Kessels’ multivolume In Almost Every Picturehas long been a coveted and revered classic of vernacular photography. In Erik Kessels: Image Tsunamithe Dutch art director has turned his attention to the abundance of images available for finding on the Internet, shared in their millions on websites like Flickr. In a world where everyone produces and edits photography, where, as Kessels says, “the average kid today gets photographed more than a celebrity of 50 years ago,” what does a single image mean, and what is its status in the overwhelming flood of images? In Kessels’ words: “Image Tsunamiholds an enormous collection of images that I live with, that I remix and edit. It’s a representation of the overload of imagery that is in my head. My hope is that the book will inspire others to make their own remixes of these images.”
