Linear and Complex Analysis for Applications aims to unify various parts of mathematical analysis in an engaging manner and to provide a diverse and unusual collection of applications, both to other fields of mathematics and to physics and engineering. The book evolved from several of the author’s teaching experiences, his research in complex analysis in several variables, and many conversations with friends and colleagues. It has three primary goals: ? to develop enough linear analysis and complex variable theory to prepare students in engineering or applied mathematics for advanced work, to unify many distinct and seemingly isolated topics, to show mathematics as both interesting and useful, especially via the juxtaposition of examples and theorems. ? The book realizes these goals by beginning with reviews of Linear Algebra, Complex Numbers, and topics from Calculus III. As the topics are being reviewed, new material is inserted to help the student develop skill in both computation and theory. The material on linear algebra includes infinite-dimensional examples arising from elementary calculus and differential equations. Line and surface integrals are computed both in the language of classical vector analysis and by using differential forms. Connections among the topics and applications appear throughout the book. The text weaves abstract mathematics, routine computational problems, and applications into a coherent whole, whose unifying theme is linear systems. It includes many unusual examples and contains more than 450 exercises.

This volume, the fifth of a continuing series on information systems science, covers four timely topics which are in the mainstream of this field. In each chapter, an attempt is made to familiarize the reader with basic background information on the advances discussed, so that this volume may be used independently or in conjunction with the previous volumes. The emphasis in this volume is focused upon data organization and access methods, software for on-line minicomputer applications, advances in micropro graming, and gramm ars and recognizers for formal and natural languages. In Chapter 1, P. C. Patton presents a tutorial survey of data organiza tion and access methods which play a central role in information system design. Research in information processing has been shifted from numerical data processing to nonnumerical information handling. In the latter case, the information is carried not only by the data but also by the structure and organization of the data base. In this chapter, the author provides the reader with a comprehensive review of various data structures, including linear lists, array structures, tree structures, and multilinked structures. He also discusses the important problem of data-base design and management. This chapter concludes with several examples of information handling systems such as a matrix interpretive system, a generalized information management system, and a criminal justice information system. The rapid reduction in cost and great increase in capability of the mini computer have made it an attractive machine for information systems.

This volume presents a collection of contributions to an international conference on complex analysis and its applications held at the newly founded Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in January 1993. The aim of the conference was to advance the theoretical aspects of complex analysis and to explore the application of its techniques to physical and engineering problems. Three main areas were emphasised: Value distribution theory; Complex dynamical system and geometric function theory; and the Application of complex analysis to differential quations and physical engineering problems.

The significance that practitioners are placing on the use of multilevel models is undeniable as researchers want to both accurately partition variance stemming from complex sampling designs and understand relations within and between variables describing the hierarchical levels of these nested data structures. Simply scan the applied literature and one can see evidence of this trend by noticing the number of articles adopting multilevel models as their primary modeling framework. Helping to drive the popularity of their use, governmental funding agencies continue to advocate the use of multilevel models as part of a comprehensive analytic strategy for conducting rigorous and relevant research to improve our nation’s education system. Advances in Multilevel Modeling for Educational Research: Addressing Practical Issues Found in Real?World Applications is a resource intended for advanced graduate students, faculty and/or researchers interested in multilevel data analysis, especially in education, social and behavioral sciences. The chapters are written by prominent methodological researchers across diverse research domains such as educational statistics, quantitative psychology, and psychometrics. Each chapter exposes the reader to some of the latest methodological innovations, refinements and state?of?the?art developments and perspectives in the analysis of multilevel data including current best practices of standard techniques. We believe this volume will be particularly appealing to researchers in domains including but not limited to: educational policy and administration, educational psychology including school psychology and special education, and clinical psychology. In fact, we believe this volume will be a desirable resource for any research area that uses hierarchically nested data. The book will likely be attractive to applied and methodological researchers in several professional organizations such as the American Educational Research Association (AERA), the American Psychological Association (APA), the American Psychological Society (APS), the Society for Research on Educational Effectiveness (SREE), and other related organizations.
