‘Arabiyyat al-Naas (Part One) offers a groundbreaking introduction to Arabic as it is written and spoken by native speakers. It combines a progressive and rigorous grounding in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) – the form employed for reading, writing and formal speaking – with an innovative integration of the spoken Levantine variety used in everyday situations in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine. Introducing the two simultaneously ‘Arabiyyat al Naas (Part One) uses each in its proper context: Levantine for conversations and MSA for reading and writing activities. In this way, the course efficiently prepares students for the practical realities of learning and "living" Arabic today. Features include: 21 theme-based units covering all the core topics expected in a first-year Arabic course, such as countries, clothes, colors, family and professions a broad range of stimulating activities and exercises fostering active engagement with the course and the development of comprehension and communication skills comprehensively covers the 5 Cs: communication, culture, connections, comparisons and communities a free DVD filmed on location in Jordan, presenting over 40 videos and incorporating a wide variety of entertaining and realistic scenarios a free companion website (www.routledge.com/cw/younes) offering a wealth of additional instructor and student resources, including a teacher’s guide, an introduction to the letters and sounds of Arabic (with audiovisual aid and writing demonstrations), audio recordings of songs and listening passages, video clips, sample tests, an answer key and language games clear explanations of grammatical structures and concepts as they occur in the reading and listening materials to encourage progressive learning and active interaction with the text a user-friendly and vibrant full colour text design, richly illustrated throughout with over 200 illustrations and photographs songs with simple lyrics tied to the themes of the course to help advance vocabulary acquisition and understanding of basic grammatical structures. Written by a dynamic author team and tested over a number of years at Cornell University, ‘Arabiyyat al-Naas (Part One) will be an essential resource for students beginning to learn Arabic. While primarily designed for classroom use, the accessibility of the course and website also renders it highly suitable for independent study. For decades, students learning the Arabic language have begun with Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and then transitioned to learning spoken Arabic. While the MSA-first approach neither reflects the sociolinguistic reality of the language nor gives students the communicative skills required to fully function in Arabic, the field continues to debate the widespread adoption of this approach. Little research or evidence has been presented about the effectiveness of integrating dialect in the curriculum. With the recent publication of textbooks that integrate dialect in the Arabic curriculum, however, a more systematic analysis of such integration is clearly becoming necessary. In this seminal volume, Mahmoud Al-Batal gathers key scholars who have implemented integration to present data and research on the method’s success. The studies address curricular models, students' outcomes, and attitudes of students and teachers using integration in their curricula. This volume is an essential resource for all teachers of Arabic language and those working in Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language (TAFL).

Haki bil-Libnani provides students of Arabic with an opportunity to acquire substantial and systematic proficiency in Lebanese dialect and culture, and is designed to work either on its own or alongside the bestselling Arabic-language textbook Al-Kitaab Part One, Third Edition. This fully online textbook and interactive website features two video story components, designed to foster proficiency as students work through each lesson while practicing vocabulary, cultural expressions, and short dialogues. The first story recreates the stories of Maha and Khaled Abul'ila from Al-Kitaab, recast in a Lebanese context starring Yara and Jamil Haddad, who speak the Lebanese dialect and reference Lebanese institutions, places, and customs. A second storyline consists of an original series of short dialogue scenes involving three main characters: Jamal, Raghida, and John Douglas. Jamal and Raghida serve as cultural liaisons who help the Lebanese-American John navigate daily life in Lebanon -- buying groceries, taking cabs, and doing Arabic homework -- while John's linguistic and cultural struggles will resonate with many students. The integration of speaking, listening, grammar, and cultural competency skills in Haki bil-Libnani: Lebanese Arabic Online Textbook and Companion Website to Al-Kitaab Part One, Third Edition, will facilitate the teaching and learning of Lebanese Arabic, while introducing students to Lebanon's vibrant and charming culture. All Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) drills and exercises from the Al-Kitaab Part One, Third Edition, website are included here, so that students using Haki bil-Libnani alongside the Al-Kitaab Part One, Third Edition, textbook will only need to purchase access to the Haki bil-Libnani companion website. Haki bil-Libnani will also be useful to individual learners with some proficiency in Arabic, who desire to learn Lebanese. This book is a basic, direct and self-guided handbook to learn Levantine dialect. It is a simple, easy to use textbook for both the motivated student and teacher alike. It is useful for beginners with no knowledge of Arabic and for those who have had about a semester or two of either dialect or MSA. It is particularly helpful for people who are going to travel to the Levant for the first time or those who have lived there for a while and need to master and reinforce what they have learned. The book is designed for foreign students who have little or no knowledge of Arabic, formal or informal. It can be used by students themselves on their own, or with the help of an instructor or a tutor. Basically every word is introduced in three forms: Arabic form, transliteration form and English meaning. A beginner non-native who only desires to speak and communicate orally can rely on transliteration and English, while a more experienced student, a heritage student or a non-native with a year of exposure to Arabic who can read and has learned some basic survival vocabulary, may also benefit from the Arabic script and the grammatical notes available in the book. Even if you are well versed in MSA, you still need to have this book. You may already be able to read the newspaper headlines or listen to the news and read a street sign, but it will sound very awkward to use MSA when you meet and greet someone, need a taxi, ask for directions, bargain and negotiate, open a bank account, order a meal or a sandwich, chat with someone in the street or in a cafe, enter a supermarket or a store, ask for the time, or make an appointment and get to know someone on a personal or even professional level, etc. The book is divided into 72 sections, and 24 lessons, mainly by topic. Each section contains pertinent vocabulary needed and used when dealing with the situation at hand. So if you are looking for a word about clothing, or medicine, for example, you simply look in that particular section. There are also sufficient exercises in translation with answers provided for you to doublecheck and verify your knowledge. Do the exercise first before you look up the answer. Continuously test yourself, memorize new words, read and speak out loud even when you are alone and pick the brain of a native friend or acquaintance. Lebanese, and Arabs in general, are impressed when you attempt to speak Arabic with them. They will go out of their way to help you and make your acquaintance. However, they will also try first to practice their English or French with you. Most of them are bilingual or even trilingual. Do not fall for this. Insist on using your Arabic first. The best way to learn a foreign language is through total immersion. Go ahead, immerse yourself. You will be forced to float. Drowning is not an option. You are too smart to drown. Study this book, and find a group of natives to chat with. Better yet, visit Lebanon and have some maza, tabbouli and araq. Then, we'll talk. Do not be afraid to make mistakes. Keep on trying. Practice makes perfect.

Your students are changing. Technology is changing. The idea of the classroom is changing. Now, the way your students learn French is changing as well! In preparation for this edition of Deux mondes, we conducted extensive research, employing a wide array of research tools including surveys, focus groups, and ethnographic studies to identify the key goals and challenges of the Introductory French course. Deux mondes, 7th edition, continues to offer a truly communicative approach that supports functional proficiency while responding to these changing needs in new and exciting ways. As a direct result of our research, we created Connect French (www.mhconnectfrench.com), a powerful online learning platform that includes the ebook, the online Cahier d'exercices, an audio/video chat tool, and a brand-new video filmed in Provence. Enhanced by these powerful new digital tools, Deux mondes, 7th edition: Engages students in authentic culture that inspires them to communicate with confidence by providing them with the natural contexts they need to develop their language skills Provides tools for flexibility and easy online course administration Achieves consistent results across face-to-face, hybrid, and online course formats *Connect French, including but not limited to the workbook/lab manual, the video program, and chat tools, is sold separately and does not come automatically with the purchase of the textbook.
