Perfect for readers of Susan Mallery and Rachel Gibson, Molly O’Keefe’s gritty and sensual tale of passion and politics features the brother of the heroine from the author’s beloved novel, Never Been Kissed. He’s a driven man who refuses to be distracted—until he meets a beautiful bartender who just may change his life. With his chiseled jaw and thick blond hair, Harrison Montgomery was born to lead. Four generations of Montgomery men have served the state of Georgia, and now he’s next in line. Harrison, though, is driven to right wrongs: namely to clean up the political mess left by his father’s greed and corruption. But Harrison must first win his congressional bid, and nothing can get in his way—not even an angel who served him whiskey and gave him a shoulder to lean on and a body to love for a night. Problem is, she’s pregnant. Scandal is brewing, and there is only one solution: marriage. Damage control? Ryan Kaminski can’t believe that a cold, calculating political animal now inhabits the body of the emotionally vulnerable stranger who gave her the most unforgettable night of her life. Really, she doesn’t want anything from Harrison, except to be left alone to have her baby in peace. But Ryan is broke, jobless, and essentially blackmailed by Harrison’s desperate family to accept this crazy marriage deal. For two years, she will have to act the role of caring, supportive wife. But what is Ryan supposed to do when she realizes that, deep in her heart, she’s falling in love? Praise for Indecent Proposal “Real, immediate, and wrenching. This is a love story not to be missed.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) “In O’Keefe’s very capable hands, readers are drawn into Ryan and Harrison’s engaging journey to understanding and love. . . . A touching, sexy and surprising story of two people from completely different worlds who turn out to be a perfect match.”—Kirkus Reviews “Whatever rating system you might use to rank book reads, Indecent Proposal by Molly O’Keefe will blow it right out of the water. . . . Once again, with this book, she excels! Indecent Proposal brings together two lonely, pained individuals, puts them in an untenable relationship, and has them come out the other side in a solid and loving partnership. But the path to get there is filled with anguish and soul searching, and whew, what a ride! . . . I can’t wait to see what O’Keefe offers next.”—Fresh Fiction “Gut-wrenching, funny, thought-provoking and romantic. Harrison and Ryan are so finely crafted you’ll walk away feeling as if you’d always know their hearts.”—The Book Nympho “Indecent Proposal is a heartfelt, poignant and sexy addition to the Boys of Bishop series that old and new fans are going to love.”—Book Reviews & More by Kathy From the Paperback edition.

The guitar-based music known as bachata was born in the Dominican Republic barrios in the early 1960s. Brought to the U.S. by Dominican migrants, it has continually developed to reflect the changing tastes of fans and musicians. Bachata became increasingly popular among younger Dominican Americans in the 1990s and 2000s. This generation of artists reshaped the music, blending multiple genres with Spanish and English lyrics to reflect their multicultural reality. In this book, 27 artists share their personal and collective insights into how modern bachata provides an intimate representation of what it means to be Dominican, Latino, multicultural and bilingual in a transnational setting.

Great stuff from a great American novelist. Jack Engelhard (Indecent Proposal… The Bathsheba Deadline… The Days of the Bitter End…) brings it as only he can in language that is economical, hard-boiled and fast-paced to uncover through the art of fiction the naked truth about a TV news personality who resembles someone we all know. Brilliant and elegantly done, Engelhard dishes the scoop on this “queen of Chick Power with legs to die for.” What’s it like to live under the glare of the spotlight, and to love after the lights go down? In Engelhard’s masterful rendering, we follow the glamorous Marjorie Carmen’s rise to TV news stardom and what it took to get there, and what it takes to stay there. She came along when network TV news was dominated by living but dull white males. We root for her, hurt for her, love with her, find fault with her, and are always fascinated by her. But she is only half the story. As she keeps winning, her husband, Rick, keeps losing. He’s a failure. He must do something to prove he’s worth keeping. The choice he makes leads to a fascinating result, and in taking us inside a teetering marriage, Engelhard is peerless. Watch for the third major character Engelhard adds to the picture – Ruben Franklin! This is a newsroom swashbuckler you’ll never forget, just as you will never forget Marjorie Carmen, so fictitious, but so true. To know her, is to know our culture. This is a superb, thrilling novel that must be read. Praise Received “Engelhard zeroes in on a news anchor who resembles Megyn Kelly. It’s fiction, but WOW!” - Bonnie Kaye, author of Jennifer Needle in Her Arm “Jack Engelhard’s novels are filled to the brim with clear spirit, serious soul, and gritty honesty. His writing style is so light and bright it carries the reading in an effortless flow.” - Linda Shelnutt, author; most recent book, Myrtle’s Penultimate Walkabout “Engelhard writes with the sparseness of Hemingway and the moral intensity of I.B. Singer.” - Michael Foster, author of Three in Love (HarperCollins) “Jack Engelhard is a writer without peer and the conscience of us all.” - John W. Cassell, author of Crossroads: 1969

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: The way in which media systems reflect our social environment and specifically how they represent and disseminate gender role models and have a lasting effect on the construction of identity is of long-standing interest both in Gender Studies and in the literary and the visual arts. In order to examine in particular the representation of women in the visual art of popular cinema, The Dominance of the Male Gaze in Hollywood Films will thus focus on the image of women in mainstream Hollywood films. Although media and specifically television and films are often considered to act largely as a social mirror , films in fact often distort social reality and continue to reflect traditional stereotypical gender constructions. In fact, these traditional gender images are not simply mirrors of real life, but also ideological signifiers: In many mainstream films that pretend to depict reality a time lag separates true social circumstances from the film reality the movie produces. Consequently, this time lag also manifest in filmic representations of gender roles means for the women s movement that feminists have hardly been able to enact new images of women outside the patriarchal context of popular films or change female stereotypes and incorporate feminist thought into mainstream films. Thus, mainstream films do not propagate an image of emancipated women, quite the reverse: women are subordinate objects of the male gaze. This general assumption has led to this thesis, which will deal with the question of whether Hollywood films, as representative of mainstream culture, still disseminate patriarchal images of women dominated by the male gaze even though feminist thought has been part of our society for some decades now. Located at the intersection of Media Studies, Cultural Studies, Sociology, and Gender Studies, this thesis will mainly follow the theoretical approach of the feminist film critic Laura Mulvey who developed the concept of the male gaze in her essay Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema . Mulvey s concept shall contribute to the analysis of the thesis that the images of women in Hollywood films still correspond to conservative patriarchal stereotypes. Within the scope of this still valid thesis, one of the major restrictions was to narrow down the film analysis to merely Hollywood film production. The reason for this restriction is first of all that Hollywood films, representative of popular taste, are globally [...]
