An epic story of how the GI Bill made it possible for the author to travel around the world to teach in strange and exotic places, and still enjoy the luxury of a professional career as a Schoolteacher, a Scientific Research Analyst; a State Department Foreign Service Officer, and work for pay as a part-time boat captain. The book is a collage of episodes describing daring adventures abroad that will captivate the reader. On private contract he taught school in Haiti. He tells about brutality and poverty endured by most of the population. He relates how he was in harms way trying to prevent a brutal killing. The reader also gets an inside look about teaching six grades simultaneously in a one-room schoolhouse in the jungle of Sumatra, far removed from civilization: including some curious events that happened while living in almost complete isolation. A portion of the book tells about his research activities. One unusual experiment shows how devoted a researcher must be. Dr Woke and the writer sat half naked in a cage feeding hundreds of mosquitoes for two months. "Thou shalt not kill." While teaching in Afghanistan, the author gives a detailed account of his adventures including a solo trek through the infamous Khyber Pass, from Jalalabad, Afghanistan to Islamabad, Pakistan, and visits to other countries as well. As a Foreign Service Officer, in the U.S. State Department, the author shares his knowledge about foreign countries including Vietnam and Egypt, and related experiences with the reader. While in Egypt, the author documents memorable and sometimes risky experiences exploring the Sahara Desert and the Sinai.

For the past two years, Jason (Jayce) Freeh has conducted surveillance operations for one of the largest private investigative firms in the Northwest. He doesn't consider himself a real detective, but with his fiftieth birthday approaching and no pension plan, he knows he'd better get some more lucrative work, or else return to his previous job as a union pipe fitter. When a wealthy doctor from Arizona offers him one hundred thousand dollars to get the goods on a shadowy individual who calls himself Paladin, Jayce decides he could be a detective-albeit an unlicensed one-on this particular case. To help his HIV-positive son end his life, the doctor has made a deal with Paladin. The doctor wants to honor his son's wishes, but he also wants Paladin, a Vietnam War protestor with past experience in assisted suicide, to pay for what the doctor considers to be a sin. Jayce takes the down payment, and over the next seventy-two hours his life is thrown into a tailspin as he deals with his married girlfriend, a self-admitted killer, and members of a rightwing religious group-the Centurions for Christ. He soon wishes he was back wrestling pipes for a living.

`To career used to mean to swerve wildly or to go swiftly. In this beautifully argued, richly documented, original, liberating work, Arthur, Inksen, and Pringle demonstrate that the new careers once more are about swift swerves, unexpected agency, and enacted opportunities and constraints. Readers will think about the future in ways they never imagined possible. This is a good book. People need to get it in their hands to see how good it is'- Karl Weick, University of Michigan The New Careers offers a major new approach to the concept of career and the relation of the individual to the contemporary workplace. It shows that our traditional conceptions of careers are rooted in the stable conditions of the Indus

A White House Secret Service agent specializing in electronic surveillance has been blown away by a masked gunman. The Aryan Disciples, a neo-Nazi group, has taken credit. Secret Service Special Agent Pete Garrison fears it's more than a warning shot delivered by extremists. His first lead is an informant who claims that the Aryans have positioned one of their own in the White House. But it's the second lead that carries the most shattering and personal implications-a blackmailer who knows of Garrison's affair with the First Lady. He has the photos to prove it. Evidence that would frame Garrison with the perfect motive for murder. Garrison's last desperate option: infiltrate the President's most powerful and intimate circles of defense. . .and outguess a killer's next move. The book was made into a major motion picture with Michael Douglas, Kiefer Sutherland and Eva Longoria.
