Business schools, leadership gurus, and strategy guides agree-leaders must have a vision. But the sad truth is that most don't...or at least not one that compels, inspires, and energizes their people. How can something so essential be practiced so little in real life? Vision may sound like a rare quality, unattainable by all except a select few-but nothing could be further from the truth. Anyone can expand their visionary capacity. You just need to learn how. In Anticipate, strategy and leadership expert Rob-Jan de Jong explains that to develop vision you must sharpen two key skills. The first is the ability to see things early-spotting the first hints of change on the horizon. The second is the power to connect the dots-turning those clues into a gripping story about the future of your organization and industry. Packed with stories and practices, Anticipate provides proven techniques for looking ahead and exploring many plausible futures-including the author's trademarked FuturePriming process, which helps distinguish signal from noise. You will discover how to: Tap into your imagination and open yourself to the unconventional * Become better at seeing things early * Frame the big-picture view that provides direction for the future * Communicate your vision in a way that engages others and provokes action * And more When you anticipate change before your competitors, you create enormous strategic advantage. That's what visionaries do...and now so can you.

Across America, especially in the aftermath of 9/11, parents rely on K12 schooling to prepare their children for the shocks, the perils, and especially the bright possibilities that are part of our warp-speed future. A new generation of school staffers is forging a fresh learning partnership with youngsters for whom creative computer-based schooling is as natural as breathing. Together, these staffers and students seek empowering ways to draw on futuristics, a pedagogy that makes the most of the study of tomorrow. Anticipate the School You Want offers pragmatic program ideas, along with many operational hints. Additionally, it shares a blueprint for developing the nation's first high school of the future and a design for conducting a biannual Futures Fair. America urgently needs an educational pathway for developing long-range forecasters, and Shostak provides recommendations for reaching that pathway. Strengthened by numerous annotated citations for articles, books, and Web sites, the book enables school staffers to draw on futuristics as they have always wanted to—ably, confidently, and with confidence that it makes a desirable, lasting difference.

During her childhood, Lee Summers came to realize what a special father she had in Henry Sonnenfeld, a former US Marine. He instilled discipline and commitment in her, and he taught her about sacrifice, heroism, and patriotism. Best of all, he had wonderful bedtime stories. Never Anticipate the Command is the first in a series to share Henry’s remarkable stories of being a US Marine during World War II and the Korean War. As told through his daughter, Henry reveals how, as a young man from New Jersey, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps after Pearl Harbor and fought the Japanese in the brutal Pacific campaign. Henry relates those first few harrowing days as a marine and the grueling training regimen on Parris Island. With remarkably vivid details, he recounts life on the island of Bougainville; tells the tale of his island pet, a womp-cat named Bougie Sam; and describes watching Pappy Boyington’s Black Sheep Squadron perform. Never Anticipate the Command recalls an era when men rose to action to protect their country. It shows how one man in particular served God, his country, and his family—in that order.

Born in England, Maj. Terry Camsey was a lifelong member of the Salvation Army. He played the cornet for well-known Salvation Army bands, and composed more than a hundred songs. For 25 years, beginning in 1984, he wrote "The Body Builder," a column for the New Frontier Chronicle, in which he explained how concepts from the Church Growth Movement could be used by the Army to reach people for Christ. He closed his career in the United States as the Vision and Corps Growth Secretary for the Western Territory. In 2015, as it celebrated its 150th anniversary, the Salvation Army impressively counted congregations and charitable works in 127 countries. But, as Camsey notes, Salvation Army corps are subject to aging. Therefore they face challenges familiar to all congregations, in that life-cycle processes are at work to erode their vitality. ANTICIPATE invites leaders to go beyond celebrating history towards envisioning a preferred and effective future. "Terry Camsey understood that when The Salvation Army grows, the Church of Jesus Christ, of which it is a vital evangelical part, also grows. Here is the fruit of decades of experience in teaching and training for growth. But, it will take courage and commitment to come to terms with its vision and its demands." Gen. Paul A. Rader, Salvation Army (retired) "Asking questions that 'rattle the cage' is a gift that Terry Camsey offered anyone involved in church leadership and mission. Terry knew how to stimulate and challenge people by asking the right questions at the right time." Lt. Col. Alan Burns, Territorial Headquarters, London
