Popular American historian Benson J. Lossing was a prolific writer whose ""Biographical Sketches of the Signers of the Declaration of American Independence"" reads like a Who's Who of the country's earliest patriots. It reveals concise details about the more than fifty elected delegates, representing all thirteen colonies, who signed one of the most famous documents in American history. From Thomas Jefferson and John Hancock to less-remembered but equally important personages like Richard Henry Lee and Robert Morris, Lossing offers interesting facts and his own portrait engravings of the individuals who were present at the formation of the United States of America.

Excerpt from Biographical Sketches of the Signers of the Declaration of American Independence: The Declaration Historical Considered; And a Sketch of the Leading Events Connected With the Adoption of the Articles of Confederation and of the Federal Constitution There are lessons of deep, abiding interest, and of inestimable value, to be learned in studying the lives of the men who perilled their all to secure the blessed inheritance of free institutions which we now enjoy. We do not learn merely the dignity and sacredness of pure patriotism, by following them in their career amid the storms of the Revolution, but all the virtues which adorn humanity are presented in such bold relief, in the private and public actions of that venerated company, that when we rise from a perusal of a narrative of their lives, we feel as if all the noble qualities of our common manhood had been passing before us in review, and challenging our profound reverence. The biography of a great man, is an history of his own times; and when we have perused the record of the actions of the men of our Revolution, we have imbibed a general knowledge of the great events of that struggle for Freedom. If this proposition is true, then we feel that this volume has a claim to the public regard, for we have endeavored to comprise within as small a compass as a perspicuous view of the subject would allow, the chief events in the lives of the men who stood sponsors at the baptism in blood of our Infant Republic. The memoirs are illustrated by copious notes explanatory of events alluded to in the course of the biographical narrative, and these, we believe, will be found a highly useful feature of the work. Readers will re-discover the forgotten treasures of the history and principles of the Declaration of Independence, recognizing the dedication of the Founding Fathers to the principles found there. The Founders’ Revolution is designed to help readers understand the principles embedded in the Declaration of Independence and to make those principles their own. The book unpacks the intent of the Founding Fathers in drafting the document and the historical circumstances surrounding its development. Every charge and every paragraph of the Declaration of Independence is discussed with supporting evidence coming from the original words of the Founding Fathers and other original source documents. The Founders’ Revolution also makes applicable comparisons with America’s current federal government and how it is acting similarly to the king of England at the time of the Declaration, showing how the Declaration and its principles are still applicable today.

In 1776, 56 men signed their names on a document that they knew might well mean their certain deaths as traitors to England. Standing on principles of faith and liberty, these men forged a powerful call for freedom and human dignity still resonating today in America. Yet, historical revisionists have distorted or attempted to wipe away every trace of this nation's Christian heritage, including the heartfelt faith of these founding fathers. More than simply facts and figures, For You They Signed provides an abundance of resources within one volume, including: • A full year of life-changing, challenging family or group devotional character studies • Over 90 illustrations, biographical summaries, and insightful quotes • Character quality definitions, Patrick Henry's speech delivered to the signers, the Christian nature of state constitutions, and the Christian nature of America's universities. The Declaration of Independence remains one of history's most enduring achievements, and this text will help you value those freedoms these men fought for in an insightfully fresh way. It will also assist you in catching the God-given vision of these faithful new Americans, igniting a fire for your family, community, and the generations to come. Here is a volume that should be found in every private and public library in America... a meticulously documented look back to the true birth of our nation. They pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor so that we could be free! "This is certainly a work for 'such a time a this'... It is my prayer that this resource will find a way into every home so that this generation can know the sacrifice required to establish the God-inspired design of our nation." -Stanley John, Senior Vice President, Focus on the Family
