The composition, which the editors entitle the "Book of Thoth," is preserved on over forty Graeco-Roman Period papyri from collections in Berlin, Copenhagen, Florence, New Haven, Paris, and Vienna. The central witness is a papyrus of fifteen columns in the Berlin Museum. Written almost entirely in the Demotic script, the Book of Thoth is probably the product of scribes of the "House of Life," the temple scriptorium. It comprises largely a dialogue between a deity, usually called "He-who-praises-knowledge" (presumably Thoth himself) and a mortal, "He-who-loves-knowledge." The work covers such topics as the scribal craft, sacred geography, the underworld, wisdom, prophecy, animal knowledge, and temple ritual. Particularly remarkable is one section (the "Vulture Text") in which each of the 42 nomes of Egypt is identified with a vulture. The language is poetic; the lines are often clearly organized into verses. The subject-matter, dialogue structure, and striking phraseology raise many issues of scholarly interest; especially intriguing are the possible connections between this Egyptian work, in which Thoth is called "thrice-great," and the classical Hermetic Corpus, in which Hermes Trismegistos plays the key role. The first volume comprises interpretative essays, discussion of specific points such as the manuscript tradition, script, and language. The core of the publication is the transliteration of the Demotic text, translation, and commentary. A consecutive translation, glossary, bibliography, and indices conclude the first volume. The second volume contains photographs of the papyri, almost all of which reproduce their original size.

Aleister Crowley's The Book of Thoth endures as one of the most definitive volumes on the tarot ever written. This classic text describes the philosophy and use of Aleister Crowley's Thoth Tarot, a deck designed by Crowley and painted by Lady Frieda Harris. The Thoth Tarot has become one of the bestselling tarot decks in the world. It is also one of the most original interpretations of the tarot, incorporating astrological, numerological, Egyptian, and Qabalistic symbolism. While there are many other useful guides to this famous tarot deck, there are no others that explain the deck in its designer's own words. This new facsimile edition of The Book of Thoth is a faithful reproduction of the Samuel Weiser Inc. 1969 edition, which in turn was a facsimile of the original O.T.O. edition printed in 1944. The text is digitally restored, printed on a heavy, coated stock, and features revised color plates and black and white illustrations of the Thoth Tarot based on new photography of the original art, courtesy of the O.T.O. and The Warburg Institute. The book text block is smyth sewn, with a rounded back, and headbands. Printed endpaper reproduces the Egyptian motif from the board covers of the 1944 edition. The cover is quality cloth over boards with gold stamping on the spine, and is wrapped with a jacket which again features updated art while matching the original design. Weiser Books takes pride in the release of this new hardcover reprint on the event of our 60th anniversary in publishing. "The Book of Thoth is an indispensable companion to the deck and the most authoritative and reliable guide to the Tarot in the New Aeon." --Hymenaeus Beta, Frater Superior, O.T.O. Understanding Aleister Crowley's Thoth Tarot was his final opus, the culmination of a lifetime of occult study and practice. With artist Lady Frieda Harris, he condensed the core of his teaching - astrology, Qabbalah, magick, gematria and numerology, and alchemy- into the 78 cards of the tarot. Although Crowley's own Book of Thoth provides insight into the cards, it is a complicated, dated book. What has been missing, and what Crowley authority Lon Milo DuQuette has created, is an introductory text for the deck. In clear language, DuQuette provides everything you need to know about Crowley's fundamental principles to get the most out of using the Thoth deck. Many use the deck simply because the artwork is so beautiful, but there is so much more to it than that. DuQuette starts with the basic historical background of this extremely popular deck before delving into descriptions of each card in depth, from both a purely tarot perspective and from an expanded, magickal point of view. Each card is described in detail regarding its straight tarot meaning, which is then expanded upon with all the other attributions Crowley intended. This unique guide will be of great interest to all tarot readers who use the Thoth Tarot- especially those looking for correspondences with other occult systems to enhance their readings- and will be treasured by students of Aleister Crowley's works.

Here is an exciting new "historical" deck from Lo Scarabeo. If you found Etteilla's Esoteric Ancient Tarots fascinating in structure and symbolism, but thought the art stark and unsophisticated, this deck will be a dream come true. True to the spirit of Etteilla, the art retains an antique feel while being sophisticated enough to please the modern palate.

The ancient Egyptians were firmly convinced of the importance of magic, which was both a source of supernatural wisdom and a means of affecting one's own fate. The gods themselves used it for creating the world, granting mankind magical powers as an aid to the struggle for existence. Magic formed a link between human beings, gods, and the dead. Magicians were the indispensable guardians of the god-given cosmic order, learned scholars who were always searching for the Magic Book of Thoth, which could explain the wonders of nature. Egyptian Magic, illustrated with wonderful and mysterious objects from European and Egyptian museum collections, describes how Egyptian sorcerers used their craft to protect the weakest members of society, to support the gods in their fight against evil, and to imbue the dead with immortality, and explores the arcane systems and traditions of the occult that governed this well-organized universe of ancient Egypt.
