The composition, which the editors entitle the "Book of Thoth," is preserved on over forty Graeco-Roman Period papyri from collections in Berlin, Copenhagen, Florence, New Haven, Paris, and Vienna. The central witness is a papyrus of fifteen columns in the Berlin Museum. Written almost entirely in the Demotic script, the Book of Thoth is probably the product of scribes of the "House of Life," the temple scriptorium. It comprises largely a dialogue between a deity, usually called "He-who-praises-knowledge" (presumably Thoth himself) and a mortal, "He-who-loves-knowledge." The work covers such topics as the scribal craft, sacred geography, the underworld, wisdom, prophecy, animal knowledge, and temple ritual. Particularly remarkable is one section (the "Vulture Text") in which each of the 42 nomes of Egypt is identified with a vulture. The language is poetic; the lines are often clearly organized into verses. The subject-matter, dialogue structure, and striking phraseology raise many issues of scholarly interest; especially intriguing are the possible connections between this Egyptian work, in which Thoth is called "thrice-great," and the classical Hermetic Corpus, in which Hermes Trismegistos plays the key role. The first volume comprises interpretative essays, discussion of specific points such as the manuscript tradition, script, and language. The core of the publication is the transliteration of the Demotic text, translation, and commentary. A consecutive translation, glossary, bibliography, and indices conclude the first volume. The second volume contains photographs of the papyri, almost all of which reproduce their original size.

Excerpt from The Wisdom of the Chinese: Their Philosophy in Sayings and Proverbs We say, in China: "Confucius! Confucius! How great Confucius! Before Confucius there never was a Confucius. Since Confucius there never has been a Confucius. How great is Confucius!" In the Western world someone has said: "Confucius invented wisdom," and when you find sayings of his like this one - "When you know a thing, to hold that you know it, and when you do not, to admit the fact, - this is knowledge," you are willing to allow him the title. Confucius and his greatest follower Mencius were reformers in the true sense of the word. Their whole aim was to construct personal character, and they demanded that the moral and spiritual nature should be substituted for the might of the strong. No rank was too high, no class too humble, to be taught this universal principle; and with no other personal authority than their own honest conviction, these men went forth to demand of kings and peoples the square acceptance of its claims. Understanding Aleister Crowley's Thoth Tarot was his final opus, the culmination of a lifetime of occult study and practice. With artist Lady Frieda Harris, he condensed the core of his teaching - astrology, Qabbalah, magick, gematria and numerology, and alchemy- into the 78 cards of the tarot. Although Crowley's own Book of Thoth provides insight into the cards, it is a complicated, dated book. What has been missing, and what Crowley authority Lon Milo DuQuette has created, is an introductory text for the deck. In clear language, DuQuette provides everything you need to know about Crowley's fundamental principles to get the most out of using the Thoth deck. Many use the deck simply because the artwork is so beautiful, but there is so much more to it than that. DuQuette starts with the basic historical background of this extremely popular deck before delving into descriptions of each card in depth, from both a purely tarot perspective and from an expanded, magickal point of view. Each card is described in detail regarding its straight tarot meaning, which is then expanded upon with all the other attributions Crowley intended. This unique guide will be of great interest to all tarot readers who use the Thoth Tarot- especially those looking for correspondences with other occult systems to enhance their readings- and will be treasured by students of Aleister Crowley's works.
