Boston occupies a unique place in English social history. Founded by a Norman baron shortly after the Conquest of 1066, it rapidly grew to become the most successful and busiest English port outside London. The story of the town’s birth and growth are vividly brought to life in this book. The great wealth brought to Boston by the wool trade in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries led to the building of the largest parish church in the country, the beautiful St. Botolph’s, known today simply as the Boston Stump. During the seventeenth century the town was a hotbed of militant Puritanism, and consequently a firm supporter of the Parliamentary cause in the English Civil War. In search of religious freedom, more than 200 of its inhabitants emigrated to America in the 1620s and 1630s to found the new city of Boston, Massachusetts; and some of those who later became famous as the Pilgrim Fathers were imprisoned in the town’s medieval Guildhall, which survives. The growth of the port in the late eighteenth century left a legacy of fine Georgian buildings, many of which are accompanied by illustrations within this book's pages. Boston’s story is brought right up to date, celebrating the complete history of this fabulous Lincolnshire town in a volume that will delight locals and visitors alike.

Lucidly explaining the legal principles of Admiralty Law in a modern context, this new edition has been fully revised and updated to include recent case law and legislation, including extensive treatment of developments within the EC. Examining the law within a commercial perspective with suggestions for how legal risks should be managed, this is the ideal text for postgraduates studying admiralty or shipping law as well as professionals within the shipping industry. The intricate rules of the Brussels/Lugano Conventions are explained alongside conflict of jurisdictions, and the application of the forum non-conveniens, doctrine and forum shopping. Breach of jurisdiction agreements and remedies are also discussed and the vexed issues of anti-suit injunctions are dealt with comprehensively. Modern Admiralty Law analyses the corporate structures of ship owning companies and the circumstances in which the corporate veil may be pierced; suggestions for legitimate corporate structures for the purpose of risk management are also put forward. The consequences of non-compliance with the ISM Code are considered (such as potential criminal liability, the effect of non-compliance upon insurance contracts and limitation of liability), alongside an update of further measures being taken by the EC and the IMO on safety of ships and cleaner seas. An ideal reference tool, the new edition of this popular and comprehensive text includes summaries of the principles and case law and encourages further investigation. In 1982, aged twenty-three, Simon Parkes paid 1 for a virtually derelict building in Brixton. Over the next fifteen years he turned it into Britain's most iconic music venue. And now he's telling his story: full of fond - and wild - reminiscences of the famous musicians who played at the venue, including Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, Lou Reed, The Ramones, New Order, the Beastie Boys and The Smiths. This is about one man's burning desire for success against the odds, his passion for live music and the excitement of those wilderness years, a far cry from the corporate world that controls the scene today. From rock-star debauchery and mixing it up with Brixton gangsters to putting on the first legal raves in the UK and countless backroom business deals, this is the story of how to succeed in business with no experience and fulfil your teenage fantasies.
