A guide to combining two powerful management techniques to transform any business organization into a masterpiece of business efficiency. Lester Dean Thurow, Dean of MIT′s Sloan School of Management, recently stated that benchmarking combined with process engineering will be the most important management technique of the 1990s. Now, in this groundbreaking book, Gregory Watson describes how top corporations worldwide have already successfully implemented that powerful cutting–edge technique––which he calls "business systems engineering"––to promote continuous improvement. More importantly, he clearly demonstrates how you can do the same in your organization. ∗ Introduces business systems engineering, a dynamic new approach to rethinking and redesigning business processes to achieve dramatic improvements in quality, cost, service, speed, and more ∗ Offers clear guidelines for using business systems engineering techniques to make your organization more dynamic, productive, and able to adapt to change in today′s global marketplace ∗ Incorporates key aspects of TQM, business process improvement, policy deployment, industrial engineering, teamwork, problem solving, and information technology into one holistic system ∗ Includes business systems engineering success stories, including those at Compaq, United Services Automobile Association and Motorola, as well as a survey of the effect of systems change across the global automobile industry

This book is addressed at decision makers, project teams, project managers, company's IT-managers, and staff of consulting companies, who are either involved in complex standard software implementation, or release migration projects. The book stresses the shortcomings of many present standard software implementations which mainly pertain to insufficiently optimised business processes, thus standard software has caused a lot of dissatisfied companies. The authors analyse certain popular implementation approaches (life-cycle-models) of different Standard Software suppliers. It shows how a new semi-process oriented way of implementing modern standard software systems may contribute to a better business performance.

This volume provides an introduction to the current debates within construction management thinking about how to improve corporate performance by the use of alterative ways of managing buyer and supplier relationships in construction supply chains and markets. It introduces the relationship marketing and partnership sourcing schools of thinking about collaborative ways of improving corporate performance through more collaborative ways of working between buyers and suppliers. This approach is contrasted with the power and leverage perspective. This later school argues that collaboration can only be implemented successfully under certain power regime circumstances and that corporate performance can only be improved if buyers and/or suppliers are aware of the full range of sourcing and relationship management options available to both parties in exchange relationships. The discussion is informed by 16 detailed case studies of alternative forms of proactive and reactive relationship management in construction, with very different win or lose outcomes. These reveal that, while some participants in construction supply chains and markets do adopt all of the major sourcing approaches available to them, this does not mean that any one approach to construction management is necessarily superior to others. There are many examples here of poor relationship management whether proactive collaborative or more reactive arms-length ways of working are adopted.
