This book emphasizes the integral connections between imagination, creativity, and spirituality and their role in healing. First, the author highlights the work of a neglected yet important psychoanalyst, Marion Milner - a painter and undeclared mystic - expanding her work on creativity, mysticism, and mental health. Second, she explores imagination and creativity as expressed in fostering hope and in spiritually-oriented therapies, particularly for mood, anxiety, and eating disorders - offering practical application of studies in imagination and the arts. Raab Mayo concludes that both creativity and the potential for transcendence are inherent in the human psyche and can work as allies in the process of recovery from mental illness.

This book presents the core principles of Viktor E. Frankl's Logotherapy, and outlines how Logotherapy can be used in conjunction with other forms of interventions. It illustrates that, beyond a philosophy, Logotherapy is also a theory of personality, and a form of therapy. The book aims to illustrate the inductive and deductive interplay between theory and practice. Volume I is devoted entirely to Logotheory. Volume II contains the chapters which portray the practical applications of Logotherapy. Each chapter ends with Points to Ponder, which aim to bridge the chapters, and to highlight connections between theory and practice. The Appendix is written in the form of a Study Guide, expanding on Logotherapy's applications in specific practice areas in line with current developments in mental health care. Corresponding to each chapter, the References section provides an extensive list of relevant sources, and related, up to date bibliography. The writing of this book follows the ground-structure of the Doctoral Dissertation entitled "The Applications of Viktor E. Frankl's Logotherapy in Counselling Psychology," (1999) by Maria (Ungar) Marshall, at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, which contains a comprehensive overview of the fundamental elements of the philosophy and practice of Logotherapy, based on an extensive review of international literature. Edward Marshall co-authored the present book, adding the chapters corresponding to the Appendix, reflecting developments in the practice, study and research in Logotherapy, since the submission of the original Dissertation, to the present. This up-to-date, and comprehensive review allows the reader to find situations in everyday life and in professional activities, where Logotherapy can be usefully applied.

Suffering is a fact of human existence. In his interdisciplinary investigation of the causes, types, value, and outcome of human suffering, Adrian C. Moulyn has discovered a purpose in it. In The Meaning of Suffering Moulyn presents his thesis, (Suffering) heals the blemishes and the fractures in our problem ridden existence, in light of the binary nature of human temporo-spacial structure. Moulyn analyzes the source of suffering as a combination of the arbitrary nature of life itself (no one actually chooses to be born), and the dichotomy of the world as we see it (objectively) and the world as we want it (subjectively). While the melancholy of being thrown-into the world lays the groundwork, the discrepancy between desires and wants and the degree to which they are satisfied becomes a source of suffering. The value of suffering is in its healing powers. Suffering helps close the gap between what we desire and what we obtain. The outcome of constructive suffering is an increased ability to deal with the inherent contradictions of life, an enhanced awareness of the truly necessary and desirable, and a stronger, more secure conquest of happiness when it is achieved. Moulyn's thesis is an intriguing and optimistic analysis of human experience, and will be an asset to philosophy collections.

The Second Great Migration, the movement of African Americans between the South and the North that began in the early 1940s and tapered off in the late 1960s, transformed America. This migration of approximately five million people helped improve the financial prospects of black Americans, who, in the next generation, moved increasingly into the middle class. Over seven years, Lisa Krissoff Boehm gathered oral histories with women migrants and their children, two groups largely overlooked in the story of this event. She also utilized existing oral histories with migrants and southerners in leading archives. In extended excerpts from the oral histories, and in thoughtful scholarly analysis of the voices, this book offers a unique window into African American women's history. These rich oral histories reveal much that is surprising. Although the Jim Crow South presented persistent dangers, the women retained warm memories of southern childhoods. Notwithstanding the burgeoning war industry, most women found themselves left out of industrial work. The North offered its own institutionalized racism; the region was not the promised land. Additionally, these African American women juggled work and family long before such battles became a staple of mainstream discussion. In the face of challenges, the women who share their tales here crafted lives of great meaning from the limited options available, making a way out of no way.
