Todays school leaders face many challenges. There is a renewed need to look at principals job satisfaction and longevity given recent trends in burnout, increased accountability, and a shortage of qualified candidates. There are conflicting demands on high school principals time and capacity. These leaders still have the traditional responsibilities of ensuring a safe environment, managing a budget, and maintaining discipline. Higher expectations for student success have brought with them an increase in school program expectations. The job of the principal has changed throughout the years. The shift from manager to instructional leader, along with an increase in responsibilities has made the job more challenging. Research also shows that not as many educators aspire to the position of high school principal, and when they do become a building leader, they tend to not stay for an extended length of time. This qualitative study examines the experiences of 12 Michigan high school principals who have been a building principal for at least five years. This phenomenological study was designed to find out what experiences high school principals describe as contributing or detracting from their job satisfaction as well as what factors contribute to or threaten their longevity. Findings include that principals find satisfaction in working with and influencing students, leading and managing change, and they enjoy doing an important and challenging job. Factors that detract from satisfaction include negative adult behaviors, lack of support and trust, and the time commitment to do the job. New findings from this study point to the fact that principals enjoy empowering others and developing leaders to help meet the challenges present in todays educational environment. A new finding with regard to job dissatisfaction includes the fact that principals do not enjoy dealing with negative teacher and adult behaviors. Finally, multiple factors were reported as contributing to longevity in the position, some of which include school board, community, central office, staff, and collegial support.

Why is it so difficult to design and implement fundamental educational reform in large city schools in spite of broad popular support for change? How does the politics of race complicate the challenge of building and sustaining coalitions for improving urban schools? These questions have provoked a great deal of theorizing, but this is the first book to explore the issues on the basis of extensive, solid evidence. Here a group of political scientists examines education reform in Atlanta, Baltimore, Detroit, and Washington, D.C., where local governmental authority has passed from white to black leaders. The authors show that black administrative control of big-city school systems has not translated into broad improvements in the quality of public education within black-led cities. Race can be crucial, however, in fostering the broad civic involvement perhaps most needed for school reform. In each city examined, reform efforts often arise but collapse, partly because leaders are unable to craft effective political coalitions that would commit community resources to a concrete policy agenda. What undermines the leadership, according to the authors, is the complex role of race in each city. First, public authority does not guarantee access to private resources, usually still controlled by white economic elites. Second, local authorities must interact with external actors, at the state and national levels, who remain predominantly white. Finally, issues of race divide the African American community itself and often place limits on what leaders can and cannot do. Filled with insightful explanations together with recommendations for policy change, this book is an important component of the debate now being waged among researchers, education activists, and the community as a whole.

There is a two step approach for putting the standards into operation: allow the standards to influence programs at the superintendent preparation level, and create a Standards Board to ensure the standards are being upheld by current superintendents.
