Clinical Chemistry considers what happens to the body’s chemistry when affected by disease. Each chapter covers the relevant basic science and effectively applies this to clinical practice. It includes discussion on diagnostic techniques and patient management and makes regular use of case histories to emphasise clinical relevance, summarise chapter key points and to provide a useful starting point for examination revision. The clear and engaging writing style appreciated by generations of readers has been retained in this new (eighth) edition, while the content has been thoroughly updated throughout. The approach and scope of this trusted text makes it ideal for integrated medical curricula for medical training and for students and practitioners of clinical and biomedical science. Additional (electronic) self-assessment material, completes this superb learning package. Bonus self-assessment materials - interactive clinical cases and two tier level MCQs (‘standard’ and ‘advanced’) New introductory chapter on basic biochemistry - including solutions, solutes, ionisation, pH, buffers, amino acids, peptides and proteins, enzyme activity, including kinetic properties, DNA structure ‘Light bulb’ sections give practical advice and clarify difficult concepts or potential pitfalls Updated references to core guidelines (UK and international) reflect latest best practice

This edition covers all aspects of the subject needed by medical students. It is a volume in the Illustrated Colour Text series, with the subject matter divided into double-page spreads; this makes the information very accessible to the reader. Full use is made of flow charts and other graphics; clinical "boxes;" summary points; case histories; and clinical photographs. The whole orientation of the book is to concentrate on how clinical biochemistry relates to the care of the patient and to ensure that the medical student understands how to interpret laboratory. Covers clinical biochemistry from the point of view of the clinician using the diagnostic service Presents topics in easily accessible two-page spreads Includes mini case histories, key point boxes, flowcharts, and summary points Well illustrated with four-color drawings and clinical photographs New appendix added of annotated web resources for students to take further many of the topics covered in the book. To reflect the difficulties people have sometimes in analyzing hyper- and hypo-kalaemia, the existing spread is split into two - one spread on hyperkalaemia and another on hypokalaemia. The spread on hypertension will be revised and updated to reflect the fact that biochemistry is used as much or more in guiding treatment as it is in screening for secondary hypertension. Spreads on Myocardial Infarction, Cancer and Tumour Markers will all substantially revised and updated.

Essential reading for candidates for the MRCPath examination and similar postgraduate examinations in clinical biochemistry. The book gives an overview of the acquisition of data, as well as concentrating on clinical aspects of the subject, giving detailed coverage of all conditions where clinical biochemistry is used in diagnosis and management. In common with other diagnostic specialties clinical biochemistry now uses an increasing number of techniques involving the 'new biology': these are covered in this book. It is also increasingly common for medically qualified clinical biochemists to become involved in the clinical management of patients (eg nutritional support) and material on this will be included. Significant changes to content to reflect changes in how clinical chemistry services are organised and to reflect the advent of metabolic medicine as a recognised specialty. Chapter on Clinical biochemistry of nutrition to include new information on regulation of appetite and the clinical management of obesity. New chapter to bring together information on inborn errors of metabolism affecting adults. New chapter on clinical biochemistry of cardiovascular disease. The diabetes chapter has been split into two separate chapters to allow more detailed description of the practical clinical management of the disease.

This book provides a structured approach to the initial assessment, resuscitation, differential diagnosis and short-term management of common on-call problems. It also provides an overall guide to hospital practice and acute clinical skills. It is designed to help junior doctors and senior medical students acquire a logical, practical and efficient approach, which is essential for problem-based learning and acute management. Clinical problem-solving is an essential skill for the doctor on call. Traditionally, the diagnosis and management of a patient’s problems are approached with an ordered, structured and sequential system (e.g. history-taking, physical examination, and review of available investigations) before formulating the provisional and differential diagnoses and the management plan. In an emergency, doctors proceed concurrently with resuscitation, history, examination, investigation and definitive treatment. Stabilisation of the airway, breathing, circulation and neurological disability must occur in the first few minutes to avoid death and disability. A ‘complete history and physical examination’ can take 60 minutes or more to complete. However, while on call this is not possible, as unnecessary time spent on a patient with a relatively minor complaint may deny adequate treatment time to patients who may require resuscitation. This book provides a focused approach to many clinical problems in order to increase efficiency and improve time management. Latest 2010 ACLS guidelines Practical problem based format – individual patient problems carefully analysed to allow the doctor to make correct assessment and not miss important diagnoses All terms, definitions and clinical information reviewed and rewritten to match local health system practice Student Consult title Completely revised throughout and updated with the latest 2010 resuscitation and antibiotic guidelines

The previous edition won first Prize (Surgery category) at the BMA Awards 2005. The judges' comment: 'A comprehensive and attractively presented 4-colour textbook of surgery aimed primarily at medical students but also of use to junior doctors and surgical technicians. The book has two key features: firstly, it provides students with coverage of every aspect of surgery; secondly, it has been designed and written to be the 'surgical companion' to Kumar & Clark's Clinical Medicine. This new edition will also offer an online version to all purchasers of the book - the first surgical textbook in the UK to make an electronic version available.' A comprehensive account of surgery - students only need to buy one text Covers general issues such as wound healing and pain control in the first section. By grouping these issues into one section at the beginning, students are immediately given an overview of what makes surgery different A regional approach is adopted for the largest section - section 2 - this reflects the way in which surgeons talk about surgery to each other The third section covers surgical specialities - paediatrics, endocrinology, urology - and also includes specialities such as ophthalmology, ENT and orthopaedics. These are often omitted from competing books to save space The logical arrangement of the three sections makes the book easy to use and refer to in clinical practice The arrangement of contents is straightforward and easily understood Text boxes are used throughout to highlight and isolate important information Includes over 350 four-colour images and line drawings original to this book and greatly praised by students Also includes over 100 black and white and approximately 50 full-colour clinical photographs, X-rays and scans Designed to complement Kumar and Clark's highly successful Clinical Medicine textbook so that students can have 'matching' texts in these complementary areas Written by an expert team of contributors Your purchase of this book entitles you to online access to the text at no extra charge. This innovative web site offers you... Access to the complete text and illustrations of this book. Integration links to bonus content in other Elsevier online titles. Content clipping for your handheld. An interactive community center with a wealth of additional resources. The more Elsevier titles you buy, the more resources you can access online! New edition of a prize-winning textbook. Completely revised throughout to reflect recent changes in surgical practice. New chapter on bariatric surgery for the treatment of morbidly obese patients. Covers the increasing use of minimally invasive surgical techniques, including robotic surgery. Emphasises the increasing impact of multimodality therapy, in particular for the treatment of cancer. Covers improvements in imaging technology and impact on surgical decision making.

Clinical Chemistry is a comprehensive textbook covering the area of medical science variously known as chemical pathology, clinical chemistry, medical biochemistry and clinical biochemistry. The biochemical processes and physiological interrelationships, of tissues, organs and molecules are discussed in the context of disease processes and related to the diagnosis, monitoring, and management of disease. Also included are analytical processes, such as immunoassay, and how these relate to clinical practice. Although the emphasis of this book is clinical biochemistry, some chapters include sections on haematology, radiology and microbiology where this helps in the understanding of disease processes. The increasing use of the techniques of molecular biology and genetics in the investigation of disease is acknowledged also by appropriate inclusion of these disciplines in a number of chapters. Standard International (SI) units of measurement are used throughout, but for tests where non-SI units are in common use as well as SI units both sets of units are quoted.
