Every year, hundreds of thousands of jailed Americans leave prison and return to society. Largely uneducated, unskilled, often without family support, and with the stigma of a prison record hanging over them, many if not most will experience serious social and psychological problems after release. Fewer than one in three prisoners receive substance abuse or mental health treatment while incarcerated, and each year fewer and fewer participate in the dwindling number of vocational or educational pre-release programs, leaving many all but unemployable. Not surprisingly, the great majority is rearrested, most within six months of their release. What happens when all those sent down the river come back up--and out? As long as there have been prisons, society has struggled with how best to help prisoners reintegrate once released. But the current situation is unprecedented. As a result of the quadrupling of the American prison population in the last quarter century, the number of returning offenders dwarfs anything in America's history. What happens when a large percentage of inner-city men, mostly Black and Hispanic, are regularly extracted, imprisoned, and then returned a few years later in worse shape and with dimmer prospects than when they committed the crime resulting in their imprisonment? What toll does this constant "churning" exact on a community? And what do these trends portend for public safety? A crisis looms, and the criminal justice and social welfare system is wholly unprepared to confront it. Drawing on dozens of interviews with inmates, former prisoners, and prison officials, Joan Petersilia convincingly shows us how the current system is failing, and failing badly. Unwilling merely to sound the alarm, Petersilia explores the harsh realities of prisoner reentry and offers specific solutions to prepare inmates for release, reduce recidivism, and restore them to full citizenship, while never losing sight of the demands of public safety. As the number of ex-convicts in America continues to grow, their systemic marginalization threatens the very society their imprisonment was meant to protect. America spent the last decade debating who should go to prison and for how long. Now it's time to decide what to do when prisoners come home.

When she was seven, Rachel Manija Brown's parents, post-60s hippies, uprooted her from her native California and moved to an ashram in a cobra-ridden, drought-stricken spot in India. Cavorting through these pages are some wonderfully eccentric characters: the ashram head, Meher Baba, best known as the guru to Pete Townshend of The Who; the librarian, who grunts and howls nightly outside Rachel's window; a holy madman, who shuffles about collecting invisible objects; a middle-aged male virgin, who begs Rachel to critique his epic spiritual poems; and a delusional Russian who arrives at the ashram proclaiming he is Meher Baba reincarnated. Astutely observed and laugh-out-loud funny, All the Fishes Come Home to Roost is an astonishing debut memoir and the arrival of a major new literary talent. The hardcover edition was named a Book Sense Pick and was selected as a Book of the Week by BN.com's Book Club.

"When first televised by the BBC, Cathy Come Home caused a tremendous uproar, provoked a special Cabinet meeting, and, most importantly, stopped the authorities from separating thousands of husbands from their families. Based on facts and situations observed by the author, Cathy Come Home is a dramatised documentary telling the story of one young woman's struggle to attain a home for her family - and her ultimate failure. Cathy's name subsequently became a symbol for Britain's homeless." "Now regarded as a milestone in broadcasting history, this edition of Sandford's illustrated screenplay comes with a new introduction by Derek Paget, Visiting Fellow in the Department of Film, Theatre and Television at the University of Reading. It details the screenplay's significance both as groundbreaking television drama and as unflinching social commentary."--BOOK JACKET.

The Conroy family knows all their neighbors in the small subdivision of Lexington, Kentucky; that is, until Joe Hawkins moves into the old Hawkins farmhouse. Joe is a gruff old man who doesn't take kindly to his neighbors. When twelve-year-old Kevin Conroy and his friend Belinda try to befriend him, they realize he isn't mean, he's frightened. After four years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, Joe was released and honorably discharged. Traumatized by the events, Joe fled to the mountains instead of returning home. Thirty-five years later, Joe comes home to his family's farmhouse, but the world he returns to is much different from the one he left. Reluctantly Joe begins to reenter society with the help of Kevin and Belinda, but will he be able to overcome the war within and accept the love this family offers him? Over 58,000 Americans lost their lives in the Vietnam War that left a deep scar on this nation and on individual hearts. Join author Tim Callahan in honoring the Vietnam veterans in Come Home, Joe—an inspiring tale of compassion and love. 'As the author of four mystery novels myself, I am continually impressed by how Tim weaves humor and lightheartedness around such powerful topics as the Vietnam war, racism, and hate; how some of our most basic beliefs are presented in a way that is meaningful to readers from kids to seasoned citizens.' —Author Bill Noel
