This book is the fruit of a very long and elaborate process. It was conceived as a comprehensive solution to several deficiencies encountered while trying to teach the essentials of Computer Vision in different contexts: to technicians from industry looking for technological solutions to some of their problems, to students in search of a good subject for a PhD thesis, and to researchers in other fields who believe that Computer Vision techniques may help them to analyse their results. The book was carefully planned with all these people in mind. Thus, it covers the fundamentals of both 2D and 3D Computer Vision and their most widespread industrial applications, such as automated inspection, robot guidance and workpiece acquisition. The level of explanation is that of an expanded introductory text, in the sense that, besides the basic material, some special advanced topics are included in each chapter, together with an extensive bibliography for experts to follow up. Well-known researchers on each of the topics were appointed to write a chapter following several guidelines to ensure a consistent presentation throughout. I would like to thank the authors for their patience, because some of them had to go through several revisions of their chapters in order to avoid repetition and to improve the homogeneity and coherence of the book. I hope they will find that the final result has been worth their efforts.

The goal ofthe symposium, "Computer Vision and Sensor-Based Robots," held at the General Motors Research Laboratories on September 2S and 26, 1978, was to stimulate a closer interaction between people working in diverse areas and to discuss fundamental issues related to vision and robotics. This book contains the papers and general discussions of that symposium, the 22nd in an annual series covering different technical disciplines that are timely and of interest to General Motors as well as the technical community at large. The subject of this symposium remains timely because the cost of computer vision hardware continues to drop and there is increasing use of robots in manufacturing applications. Current industrial applications of computer vision range from simple systems that measure or compare to sophisticated systems for part location determination and inspection. Almost all industrial robots today work with known parts in known posi tions, and we are just now beginning to see the emergence of programmable automa tion in which the robot can react to its environment when stimulated by visual and force-touch sensor inputs. As discussed in the symposium, future advances will depend largely on research now underway in several key areas. Development of vision systems that can meet industrial speed and resolution requirements with a sense of depth and color is a necessary step.

Texture analysis is an important generic research area of machine vision. The potential areas of application include biomedical image analysis, industrial inspection, analysis of satellite or aerial imagery, content-based retrieval from image databases, document analysis, biometric person authentication, scene analysis for robot navigation, texture synthesis for computer graphics and animation, and image coding. Texture analysis has been a topic of intensive research for over three decades, but the progress has been very slow. A workshop on “Texture Analysis in Machine Vision” was held at the University of Oulu, Finland, in 1999, providing a forum for presenting recent research results and for discussing how to make progress in order to increase the usefulness of texture in practical applications. This book contains extended and revised versions of the papers presented at the workshop. The first part of the book deals with texture analysis methodology, while the second part covers various applications. The book gives a unique view of different approaches and applications of texture analysis. It should be of great interest both to researchers of machine vision and to practitioners in various application areas. Contents:Nonparametric Texture Analysis with Complementary Spatial Operators (M Pietikäinen & T Ojala)Multi-Resolution Clustering of Texture Images (S Battiato & G Gallo)Robustness of Local Binary Pattern (LBP) Operators to Tilt-Compensated Textures (M Soriano et al.)Using Texture in Image Similarity and Retrieval (S Aksoy & R M Haralick)Tongue Texture Analysis Using Gabor Wavelet Opponent Colour Features for Tongue Diagnosis in Traditional Chinese Medicine (P C Yuen et al.)Feature Evaluation of Texture Test Objects for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (A Materka et al.)Automatic Detection of Errors on Textures Using Invariant Grey-Scale Features and Polynomial Classifiers (M Schael & H Burkhardt)Combining Analysis and Synthesis of Textures for the Animation Industry (M Ollila et al.)and other papers Readership: Researchers, graduate students and industrialists in the field of machine vision. This indispensable text introduces the foundations of three-dimensional computer vision and describes recent contributions to the field. Fully revised and updated, this much-anticipated new edition reviews a range of triangulation-based methods, including linear and bundle adjustment based approaches to scene reconstruction and camera calibration, stereo vision, point cloud segmentation, and pose estimation of rigid, articulated, and flexible objects. Also covered are intensity-based techniques that evaluate the pixel grey values in the image to infer three-dimensional scene structure, and point spread function based approaches that exploit the effect of the optical system. The text shows how methods which integrate these concepts are able to increase reconstruction accuracy and robustness, describing applications in industrial quality inspection and metrology, human-robot interaction, and remote sensing.
