In the last decades, the technology of dam protection has undergone major advancements. The increasing demand for safety in modern society has created the need for cost-effective measures to protect critical infrastructure such as dams. This situation has resulted in the drafting of new regulations and technical manuals in countries like Norway, Sweden, and the USA, among others. Dam Protections against Overtopping and Accidental Leakage includes the latest advances in dam protection, and a portfolio of applications in representative case studies. The main topics include: - Failure of embankment and concrete dams due to overtopping or accidental leakage - Hard protections for embankment dams (RCC, wedge-shaped blocks, reinforced concrete slabs) - Soft protections for embankment dams (rockfill toes, articulated concrete blocks, vegetation cover) - Concrete dam protections and additional issues directly related to dam protections The book includes contributions from the 1st International Seminar on Dam Protections against Overtopping and Accidental Leakage (Madrid, Spain, 24-26 November 2014), and also a summary of the technical manual "Overtopping Protection for Dams", published by the US Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in March 2014. Dam Protections against Overtopping and Accidental Leakage provides a comprehensive summary of dam protections, covering case studies and applied research worldwide, and will be invaluable to professionals and academics in Dam Engineering.

In an increasingly urbanized world, water systems must be designed and operated according to innovative standards in terms of climate adaptation, resource efficiency, sustainability and resilience. This grand challenge triggers unprecedented questions for hydro-environment research and engineering. Shifts in paradigms are urgently needed in the way we view (circular) water systems, water as a renewable energy (production and storage), risk management of floods, storms, sea level rise and droughts, as well as their consequences on water quality, morphodynamics (e.g., reservoir sedimentation, scour, sustainability of deltas) and the environment. Addressing these issues requires a deep understanding of basic processes in fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, surface and groundwater flow, among others.

This book provides a comprehensive description of the analysis and design process of some hydraulic concrete structures designed to retain and contain aqueous liquid. The first edition discussed six types of structures of different functions, namely: (a) An underground sedimentation tank for sewage treatment.(b) An underground digestion tank for sludge treatment.(c) An underground reservoir to store fresh potable water.(d) An immersed highway tunnel under the river bed.(e) An indoor swimming pool of rectangular shape for public recreation.(f) A gravity dam across a valley for converting the valley into a fresh water reservoir. This Second Edition incorporates another type of hydraulic structure, namely spillway. The spillway structure plays a vital role in regulating the designed reservoir water level to meet the fluctuating demand of water supply for the generation of hydroelectricity, irrigation and water supply purposes in controlling the height of reservoir water level downstream of the river. The spillway structure subjected to seismic hydrodynamic pressure in addition to the hydrostatic pressure, has been analysed and designed in full compliance with Eurocodes EC 2: Part 1–1 and Part 3 as water-retaining structure. The other six structures have been analysed and designed with reference to the relevant clauses of codes of practice prescribed in Eurocodes 2 and BS 8007 and BS 8110. The book is designed to serve as a useful practical guide and a valuable reference for senior undergraduate students of civil engineering and postgraduate students specializing in structural design, as well as practising and consulting engineers involved in the design and execution of hydraulic concrete structures.
