Nine years younger than Gandhi, Chakravarti Rajagopalachari or Rajaji was described by him as his "conscience keeper" and, at one time, as his "only possible successor". As his southern general, Rajaji campaigned for freedom, promoting khadi and prohibition. Though they shared nearly thirty years of colleagueship, hardship, friendship—and kinship, when daughter Lakshmi married Devadas Gandhi, Rajaji remained throughout a man of his own mind. The eighty odd largely unpublished letters from this contrarian statesman to his leader, Mahatma Gandhi, and those to his son-in-law Devadas Gandhi and to his grandson, that are presented here come from family archives and public repositories and cover the years from 1920 to 1955, in the run-up to Independence and its early years. Described are the struggles and endeavours, large and small, made in the public arena, besides the inner world of friends, of home and hearth, with both spheres coalescing seamlessly. Frank, brave—at times, bitter, the letters are remarkably free of recrimination or anything that would diminish the dialogue. Observed always is the healthy respect of the freedom to differ, to persuade, to agree to disagree, but never to let down or part. Complied, edited and annotated by Gopalkrishna Gandhi, in a manner he believes his father, Devadas, would have approved, these letters are accompanied by a deeply felt and illuminating introduction. They offer us a rare glimpse into the lives of two of the tallest Indians of our age, when idealism rode strong but was also challenged.

Ruth Winstone retells Britain's history through the great diarists of the last century, drawing back the curtain on the lives of political classes, their doubts, ambitions, and emotions. She moves deftly among those in the thick of it, showing the elation, anger, doubts, jealousy, joys and fears of people as they record their own and the nation's triumphs and disasters. To this potent mix she adds the mordant perceptions of observers like Virginia Woolf, Cecil Beaton, Peter Hall and Roy Strong, and the vivid records of everyday life found in the diaries of otherwise ordinary men and women. Events, Dear Boy, Events reveals Britain's recent past in the words of the actors who were shaping the events of the day. This is living real-time history.

Petronella Wyatt writes: 'The eccentricities of my father, Lord (Woodrow) Wyatt (1918-1997), are a legend. I, his only daughter, was required to participate in his astonishing behaviour with all the enthusiasm I could muster. This resulted in a childhood of a kind unknown to the late 20th-century - a mixture of Edwardian extravagance, Victorian whimsicality and a vivid 18th-century haute sophistication. 'Father was the last of the old school. Described by his friend and former political rival Roy Jenkins as 'the ultimate original', he was a politician, writer, race-horse owner, womaniser and bon vivant - a unique product of pre-war English civilisation. His career ensured him a varied circle of friends. I grew up with such companions as Harold Macmillan, Margaret Thatcher, Rupert Murdoch, Robin Day, Sir James Goldsmith, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, Princess Margaret, the Duke of Devonshire and much of Debrett's Peerage. 'Each chapter of the book will contain personal and historically important anecdotes about the famous that have never before appeared in print and which will generate considerable news coverage. What I am writing is a waspish social document - irreverent, satirical, dramatic and scandalous, disclosing how the privileged enjoy their privileges

Gandhi’s involvement in Middle Eastern politics is largely forgotten yet it goes to the heart of his teaching and ambition - to lead a united freedom movement against British colonial power. _x000D_ _x000D_ Gandhi became involved in the politics of the Middle East as a result of his concern over the abolition of the Ottoman Caliphate following the First World War. He subsequently - at the invitation of the Jewish Agency - sought to reconcile Jews and Arabs in a secret deal at the time of the Mandate of Palestine. However, Jewish and British interference coupled with the Arab Revolt and the rise of the Muslim League in India thwarted his efforts. Like many who would follow, Gandhi was unable to solve the problems of the Middle East, but this book reveals his sincere and previously obscure attempt to do so._x000D_ _x000D_ In this ground-breaking history, Simone Panter-Brick reveals a fascinating new facet of Gandhi’s work and personality. Drawing on recently discovered letters from Gandhi, Panter-Brick traces his development from his optimistic vision for the Middle East to his plans for a non-violent solution and its ultimate failure. Confronted by opposition on all sides, Gandhi’s experience in South Africa and India was not sufficient to enable him to resolve the Palestinians’ problems, especially after he became embroiled in a political struggle with Jinnah and the Muslim League in India. The British plan to partition Palestine also helped to derail Gandhi’s plans for peace in the region. Even the Jewish Agency refused Gandhi’s proposed negotiations - proposals that were never made public. Despite Gandhi’s conviction that peace in the Middle East was attainable, he could not overcome these many obstacles. _x000D_ _x000D_ Gandhi’s experience in the Middle East was in marked contrast to his other successes around the world and is crucial for a full understanding of his life and teachings. Gandhi in the Middle East offers many new and revealing insights into the goals and limits of an international statesman at a critical period of imperial history. _x000D_
