Repulsiveness personified, that's me. I own a mirror, and I'm not afraid to look in it. What you see on the surface is a reflection of what runs under my skin. I'm a loan shark. Breaking people is in my blood. The Haynes's were supposed to be a straightforward job. Go in and pull the trigger twice. One bullet for Charlie, one for his sister. But when I saw Valentina, I wanted her. Only, in our world, those who owe us don't get second chances. No way in hell will my mother let her live. So I devised a plan to keep her. It's depraved. It's immoral. It's dubious. It's perfect.Just like her.(DUBIOUS is the first full-length novel in a two-part duet and ends on a cliffhanger. The second book, CONSENT, will be available on 14 November 2017. This is a dark romance with a criminal anti-hero and forced seduction. Reader discretion is advised.)

A riveting novel of labor strife and apocalyptic violence, now a major motion picture starring James Franco, Bryan Cranston, Selena Gomez, and Zach Braff At once a relentlessly fast-paced, admirably observed novel of social unrest and the story of a young man's struggle for identity, In Dubious Battle is set in the California apple country, where a strike by migrant workers against rapacious landowners spirals out of control, as a principled defiance metamorphoses into blind fanaticism. Caught in the upheaval is Jim Nolan, a once aimless man who find himself in the course of the strike, briefly becomes its leader, and is ultimately crushed in its service. Kathy Davis explores cosmetic surgery as a cultural phenomenon of late modernity. She critically engages with the notion of cosmetic surgery as a neutral technology and shows how it is implicated in the surgical erasure of embodied difference.

A dictionary unlike any other, Dubious Definitions: A Dictionary of Misinterpretation is a clever, yet infuriatingly entertaining read. It provides totally unreliable, inaccurate, tortured meanings to over 1,000 unfortunate words through the use of cryptic stupidity, abused double entendre, as well as the rigorous application of a finely honed level of ignorance. Dubious Definitions is the essential reference work for all those who love words and are content only with the most authoritative and soundly based interpretations. It is guaranteed to intrigue, puzzle, annoy, amuse, infuriate and mislead in generous portions, while still providing a challenge to the conventional viewpoint and a welcome diversion for the lateral thinker. Though often far-fetched, many of the meanings ring with a convincing aura of authenticity, which only adds to the satisfaction of untangling them. The quality of the author's research and his depth of learning are clearly evident throughout. The work is Dubious, at best!

Take an enchanting tour through the tangled roots of English Quick, what is the common denominator of the following words: onion, twinkle, travel, squad, foist, semester, October, noon, and dicker? By the time you finish reading Dubious Doublets, the answer will be as obvious to you as the relationship between lettuce and galaxy, nostril and thrill, or witch and vegetable! This surprising, enlightening, and entertaining guide uses a delightfully innovative approach to explore the evolution, lineage, and proliferation of words. Beginning with pairs of seemingly unrelated modern English words–dubious doublets–the author traces them back through the millennia to reveal not only their common roots, but also the living thoughts that form the true links between these improbable pairs. You’ll discover, for example, why the words flamenco and flamingo are both related to the complexions of the Dutch, how the biblical son of Isaac is related to a French garment and a Halloween decoration, and what going berserk has to do with playing hopscotch. You'll also uncover the common roots of such seemingly incompatible dyads as bully/friar, muscle/mouse, and everyone’s favorite, feather/hippopotamus. Richly supplemented with cultural anecdotes, literary excerpts, and lively discussions on a broad variety of relevant topics–not to mention a series of whimsical illustrations that offer intriguing clues to word origins–Dubious Doublets is, quite simply, a word buff’s delight.

A Dubious Science tells the story of nineteenth-century French political economy, an academic discipline that aspired to the status and authority of a «hard» science alongside such disciplines as physics and chemistry. It chronicles political economists’ encounter with «the social question» – all those unexpected social consequences of nineteenth-century industrialization – which offered concrete evidence that industrial capitalism showed few signs of guaranteeing happiness and economic success to all productive members of society. The social question forced economists to admit that their theoretical assumptions were not working in practice the way they were supposed to in theory and to confront the possibility that their science might be less certain than they had believed. This book explores the relationship between the unexpected socio-economic realities of an industrializing society and the disciplinary formation and self-protection of an aspiring human science, and it links political economy’s aspirations to governmentality, that peculiarly modern type of power explored by Michel Foucault. Like other «dubious» human sciences during the nineteenth century, French political economy was embroiled in a network of interventionist strategies, administered both from inside and outside the state, designed to produce docile bodies, obedient souls, and a content and productive population. A Dubious Science should prove valuable in courses on economic thought and its history; the history of the human sciences; the history and sociology of the professions; as well as the broader history of European industrialization and its consequences.

What were the intentions of early China’s historians? Modern readers must contend with the tension between the narrators’ moralizing commentary and their description of events. Although these historians had notions of evidence, it is not clear to what extent they valued what contemporary scholars would deem “hard” facts. Offering an innovative approach to premodern historical documents, Garret P. S. Olberding argues that the speeches of court advisors reveal subtle strategies of information management in the early monarchic context. Olberding focuses on those addresses concerning military campaigns where evidence would be important in guiding immediate social and political policy. His analysis reveals the sophisticated conventions that governed the imperial advisor’s logic and suasion in critical state discussions, which were specifically intended to counter anticipated doubts. Dubious Facts illuminates both the decision-making processes that informed early Chinese military campaigns and the historical records that represent them.
