This gathering of all Dylan Thomas's stories, ranging chronologically from the dark, almost surrealistic tales of Thomas's youth to such gloriously rumbustious celebrations of life as A Child's Christmas in Wales and Adventures in the Skin Trade, charts the progress of "The Rimbaud of Cwmdonkin Drive" toward his mastery of the comic idiom.

Silent Film and the Triumph of the American Myth is a broad cultural study that connects the rise of film to the rise of America as a cultural center and world power in the twentieth century. Cohen argues that through the medium of silent film, America was able to sever its literary and linguistic ties to Europe, assert its cultural independence, and forge a unique form of cultural expression. Silent films drew on elements developed in popular forms of representation like photography, landscape panoramas, and vaudeville performance to create a medium that more accurately represented the American experience.

Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1.5 (A), University of Tubingen (English Seminar University, Tubingen), course: Version of Welsh, 8 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: I have chosen the short story A Visit to Grandpa s from Dylan Thomas book Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog because for me it reflects a close relation between himself as a child and the countryside of Wales and how he felt and what he experienced there. In my first section I want to point out the changes in Dylan Thomas s writing and how the story A Visit to Grandpa s is connected with his own life and the time when he grow up. Linked to his own life then comes a kind of comparison of his childhood and our, the reader s, memory of childhood will follow. In the main part I give a short description of the story and an introduction to the different characters. In connection with the description of the story I point out important things about atmosphere and characters in the narration and I want to connect parts of the story to the appearing situation and atmosphere. In addition to the explanation of the plot the occurring dreams will be mentioned and I try to explain what they might mean. The last part about the style of writing deals with the way Dylan Thomas wrote the short story A Visit to Grandpa s. Then in the conclusion I want to bring together what I have said before and try an attempt why an adult reader still understands the feelings and problems in this child story."

This first full-scale treatment of the early prose of Dylan Thomas demonstrates the unity of his total work. Pratt argues that the inward journey of the poetic imagination which is implicit in poetry is often explicit in prose. Her study of Thomas’ early prose alongside his early poetry helps to elucidate all of his writing. Pratt includes three appendices: a chronology, a summary of the critics’ attitudes toward the problem of influence, and a bibliographical sketch of materials in the Parris surrealist magazine transition, which are paralleled in Thomas’ prose.

Jimmy Carter remembers Christmas in Plains, Georgia, the source of spiritual strength, respite, friendship, and vacation fun in this charming portrait. In a beautifully rendered portrait, Jimmy Carter remembers the Christmas days of his Plains boyhood—the simplicity of family and community gift-giving, his father’s eggnog, the children’s house decorations, the school Nativity pageant, the fireworks, Luke’s story of the birth of Christ, and the poignancy of his black neighbors’ poverty. Later, away at Annapolis, he always went home to Plains, and during his Navy years, when he and Rosalynn were raising their young family, they spent their Christmases together recreating for their children the holiday festivities of their youth. Since the Carters returned home to Plains for good, they have always been there on Christmas Day, with only one exception in forty-eight years: In 1980, with Americans held hostage in Iran, Jimmy, Rosalynn, and Amy went by themselves to Camp David, where they felt lonely. Amy suggested that they invite the White House staff and their families to join them and to celebrate. Nowadays the Carters’ large family is still together at Christmastime, offering each other the gifts and the lifelong rituals that mark this day for them. With the novelist’s eye that enchanted readers of his memoir An Hour Before Daylight, Jimmy Carter has written another American classic, in the tradition of Truman Capote’s A Christmas Memory and Dylan Thomas’s A Child’s Christmas in Wales.
