Renowned designers Charles and Ray Eames are among the greatest designers of the 20th century. They are, of course, most well known for their groundbreaking and iconic furniture designs, but they also created important, creative, experimental, and beautiful work in the areas of architecture, exhibit design, textile design, product design, graphic design, toy design, film, and photography. The Eameses' distinctly postwar American enthusiasm and openness to the world around them gave them free license to explore work in many disciplines. This book celebrates the seamlessness and fluidity in which they operated as both a husband-and-wife team and as designers unrestricted by traditionally professional boundaries. They brought a sense of innocence and playfulness to the design process, as well as a tremendous love and discipline in all they created in many different fields and mediums. Augmenting the abundant visual images, Eames Demetrios--Charles's grandson and the director of the Eames Office--has written chapter essays and an insightful introduction.

Pioneers of the 1950s and of the optimistic American way of life, Charles and Ray Eames created the greatest modern furniture "classics" between 1941 and 1978. They designed more than 20 chair models, mostly unique pieces, and developed know-how in the art of sitting. The Plywood Chairs LCW and DCW (1946), the Aluminum Group (1958) and the Lounge Chair (1956) have become true symbols of design that remain references today. Still produced, they inspire the admiration of new generations to convey the generous social ideal of their designers.

With the new "By Architects" series, Ediciones Poligrafa launches an innovative project dedicated to showcasing furniture and objects designed by some of the most important architects of the twentieth century. Three titles open this series: "Alvar Aalto," "Jean Prouve" and "Ray and Charles Eames." Best known for their contributions to architecture, furniture design (especially the Eames chair), industrial design, film and photography, Charles and Ray Eames remain among the most renowned American designers of the twentieth century. The couple married in 1941 and moved to California, where they pursued their furniture design in molded plywood. During the war they were commissioned by the U.S. Navy to produce molded plywood splints, stretchers and experimental glider shells. In 1946, Evans Products began producing the Eames' molded plywood furniture. Their iconic molded plywood chair was called "the chair of the century" by the influential architectural critic Esther McCoy. In 1949, Charles and Ray designed and built their own home in Pacific Palisades, their design and imaginative use of materials making this house a mecca for architects and designers internationally. Today it is considered one of the most important postwar residences built anywhere in the world. After the war, the Eames continued to create new furniture designs, such as the Fiberglass Chairs (1950), the famous Lounge Chair and Ottoman (1956), the Time Life stool (1960), the 3473 sofa (1964) and the seating for Dulles and O'Hare airports--a design still in use in lounges around the world today. In the 70s they expanded their operations into cinema, producing many beautiful short films. Charles and Ray received honorary degrees and awards from universities and organizations across the country. The Eames Office still operates today.

An Eames Anthology collects for the first time the writings of American designers Charles (1907–1978) and Ray Eames (1912–1988). Celebrated for their groundbreaking work in graphic design, industrial design, exhibition design, architecture, and film, the Eameses' prolific and influential career changed the way Americans saw and thought about everyday objects. Widely known as professional collaborators, Charles and Ray were also a married couple, and the texts collected here reveal a behind-the-scenes look at the myriad motivations, inspirations, and outcomes of their partnership over fifty years. Previously unpublished materials such as handwritten notes and correspondence are featured chronologically alongside articles, exhibition reviews, editorials, conference papers, and magazine covers, as well as sections from oral history. The anthology explores the Eameses' iconic projects such as Case Study House 9 and the molded plywood chair, as well as their work for major corporations as both designers (Herman Miller) and consultants (IBM, Polaroid). Personal correspondence with luminaries such as Henry Ford, Richard Neutra, and Eero Saarinen, among many others, provides insight into the forces behind the advance of modernity in mid-century America.

Charles and Ray Eames, a husband-and-wife partnership, were among the most innovative and broad-based of American designers. Known primarily for furniture design and their explorations of film and photographic media, the Eames's own house was one of their few experiments with architecture. Inspired by the Case Study Program, which was propagated by California Arts and Architecture magazine in the 1940s and 1950s, the house was assembled entirely from standardized industrial components, and composed with a sensitive irregularity which reflected Eames' interest in traditional Japanese wood-framed architecture. Sited at the top of a gently inclined meadow, behind a protective row of mature eucalyptus trees, light filters into the interior where the furniture and judiciously selected objects form a significant part of the architectural ensemble.
