A nice New England family has a dark secret in this “superb exercise in suspense” from the New York Times–bestselling author (The New York Times Book Review). Megan and Duncan Richards are no longer the radical activists they were in 1968. He’s a banker, and she works in real estate. They have a fine house, impeccable reputations, and three beautiful kids. Their past is safely stashed away until the day Duncan gets a call from the woman he’s spent decades trying to forget. Once, he knew her as Tanya, the charismatic leader of Northern California’s militant Phoenix Brigade. She had orchestrated their last robbery—a catastrophe that ended in bloodshed and murder. Megan and Duncan escaped undetected with new lives. Tanya wasn’t so lucky. She’s spent eighteen years in prison, eighteen years nursing the perfect revenge on her deserters. Now she’s free, and there isn’t a soul Megan and Duncan can turn to for help. What happens when a family is pushed to the brink? The answer “is the stuff of which parents’ nightmares—and well-crafted novels—are made” (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution). “Day of Reckoning is dynamite.” —Chicago Tribune “Gripping.” —The Washington Post

He tells the story of a young boy who loses his father at the age of 9. He wanted to study medicine, but his uncle was against it because medicine was a long and difficult profession. He managed to succeed and entered medical school, graduating with honors. Those were years of intense socio-political turmoil, almost twice losing his life. He recalls his experiences as a teenager, college student, and as an intern and resident. Times were then different. How things have changed since in the medical field. His first encounter with death was an unforgettable experience. Despite his desperate therapeutic measures he couldn't save his patient's life.He understood what the 'raison d'etre' was: To conquer it. Death was almost everywhere. Each day someone died. He seemed to become acquainted with and he no longer feared it. He came to accept it, not as a tragedy, but rather as one of life's unavoidable facts. He describes the emotions of his first operation, the thrill of feeling like a real surgeon under the scrutinizing look of the astonished anesthesiologist and the skepticisim and worries of the Reverend Mother OR nurse supervisor. The former surprised at his courage, the latter concerned about the fetus. He not only performed his operation with success, but also his first and last baptism. Disillusioned, he abandoned his country to face new challenges and difficulties in America. He wasn't sure if the price paid to study medicine justified all his efforts. The book is an example of the tenacity and dedication of a foreign physician pursuing an uncertain future. A formidable lesson for a new generation of medical students.

This dual-language text provides theory and methodology for teaching reading in Spanish to Spanish/English bilingual or Spanish-dominant students. The goal is to help educators teach these students the skills necessary to become proficient readers and, thus, successful in the school system. At the very core of the book are the hispano-parlantes--the Spanish-speaking children--who bring to the schools, along with their native language and cultures, a wealth of resources that must be tapped and to whom all educators have a responsibility to respond. True to the concepts of developing bilingual educators to serve bilingual students, the text presents chapters in English and Spanish. Each chapter is written in only one language at the preference of the author. Thus, to be successful with this book, the reader must be bilingual. Themes emphasized in the text include current reading methodologies, the concept of reading as developmental literacy skills, reading in the content areas, new views of the development of proficiency in the second language, issues related to students with special learning needs, assessment, and the uses of technology in the delivery of instruction. Never losing sight of its goal--to teach reading in Spanish to bilingual or Spanish-dominant students--the book includes a series of focusing questions and follow-up activities; these are not simply translations of existing activities, strategies, and techniques intended for monolingual English students, but specifically designed to be appropriate for Spanish-speaking students. Directed to university preservice and in-service instructors of reading and bilingual education as well as administrators and district- and school-level staff developers who work with Hispanic populations, the book is sensitive at all times to nuances of the languages and cultures of the intended audiences.

A translation from the Spanish into English of the play by JosE de Espronceda y Delgado. The translation is by Robert M. Fedorchek and the introduction is by Michael Iarocci. This is number 9 in Juan de la Cuesta Hispanic Monograph's Serie de traducciones crIticas. *** What to say of the rebel who fears neither God nor the devil, and who would challenge the Almighty to a duel? Such a man is don FElix de Montemar, the Student of Salamanca, a "second don Juan Tenorio" and profligate descendant of the first don Juan Tenorio dramatized so memorably by Tirso de Molina in The Trickster of Seville (El burlador de Sevilla, 1630). We might say that he is the literary incarnation of JosE de Espronceda y Delgado (1808-42), the greatest of the Spanish Romantic poets, the champion of liberty who gave voice to dissidents and loners on the fringes of society. In rousing verses and stirring refrains Espronceda sings of the individual in "The Pirate's Song" (La canciOn del pirata), "The Beggar" (El mendigo), "The Song of the Cossack" (El canto del cosaco), and "The Executioner" (El verdugo). And in his long unfinished epic poem of six cantos--the seventh is but a fragment--"The Devil World" (El diablo mundo), he offers illusion and disillusion, a wide-ranging vision that encompasses the many extremes of the human experience. On the world's stage, however, the lion's share of the poet's everlasting fame may just possibly rest on "The Student of Salamanca" (El estudiante de Salamanca). The protagonist don FElix de Montemar--a student in title only--seduces and then abandons genteel, tender-hearted doNa Elvira, who in her final moments writes to him of her trampled, unreciprocated love. After killing her brother, don Diego, who had sought to avenge his sister, don FElix will come upon a ghostly white ethereal apparition that he follows through shadowy streets only to witness don Diego's and his funeral procession. And it is after he scoffs at his own obsequies that he begins a phantasmagorical descent from which there is no escape. "The Student of Salamanca" is the second of the three universally recognized don Juan figures in Spanish literature, and all of them are concerned--to varying degrees--with God and salvation or damnation. Tirso's refuses to repent and faces divine wrath; JosE Zorrilla's don Juan (Don Juan Tenorio, 1844), who also witnesses his own funeral procession, will repent, know God's mercy, and be saved through doNa InEs's love for him; what don FElix will know is the embrace of a livid skeleton, and instead of the music that Zorrilla's don Juan hears as his life ebbs, don FElix will hear an altogether different sound.

The story begins on a cold and bleak Christmas Eve in London, seven years after the death of Ebenezer Scrooge's business partner, Jacob Marley. Scrooge, an old miser, hates Christmas and refuses an invitation to Christmas dinner from his nephew Fred. He turns away two men who seek a donation from him in order to provide food and heating for the poor, and only grudgingly allows his overworked, underpaid clerk, Bob Cratchit, Christmas Day off with pay to conform to the social custom. At home that night, Scrooge is visited by Marley's ghost, who wanders the Earth, entwined by heavy chains and money boxes, forged during a lifetime of greed and selfishness. Marley tells Scrooge that he has one chance to avoid the same fate: he will be visited by three spirits and he must listen to them or be cursed to carry chains of his own, much longer than Marley's chains.
