This book provides in-depth knowledge about the fabrications, structures, properties and applications of three outstanding electrochemically engineered nanoporous materials including porous silicon, nanoporous alumina and nanotubular titania. The book integrates three major themes describing these materials. The first theme is on porous silicon reviewing the methods for preparation by electrochemical etching, properties and methods for surface functionalization relevant for biosensing applications. Biomedical applications of porous silicon are major focus, described in several chapters reviewing recent developments on bioanalysis, emerging capture probes and drug delivery. The second theme on nanoporous alumina starts with describing the concept of self-organized electrochemical process used for synthesis nanopore and nanotube structures of valve metal oxides and reviewing recent development and progress on this field. The following chapters are focused mainly on optical properties and biosensing application of nanoporous alumina providing the reader with the depth of understanding of the structure controlled optical and photonic properties and design of optical biosensing devices using different detection principles such as photoluminescence, surface plasmon resonance, reflective spectrometry, wave guiding, Raman scattering etc. The third theme is focused on nanotubular titania reviewing three key applications including photocatalysis, solar cells and drug delivery. The book represents an important resource for academics, researchers, industry professionals, post-graduate and high-level undergraduate students providing them with both an overview of the current state-of-the-art on these materials and their future developments.

Nanomedicine is defined as the application of nanobiotechnology in clinical medicine, which is currently being used to research the pathomechanism of disease, refine molecular diagnostics, and aid in the discovery, development, and delivery of drugs. In The Handbook of Nanomedicine, Third Edition, Prof. Kewal K. Jain updates, reorganizes, and replaces information in the comprehensive second edition in order to capture the most recent advances in this dynamic field. Important components of nanomedicine such as drug delivery via nanobiotechnology and nanopharmaceuticals as well as nanooncology, where the greatest number of advances are occurring, are covered extensively. As this text is aimed at nonmedical scientists, pharmaceutical personnel, as well as physicians, descriptions of the technology involved and other medical terminology are kept as clear and simple as possible. In depth and cutting-edge, The Handbook of Nanomedicine, Third Edition informs its readers of the ever-growing field of nanomedicine, destined to play a significant role in the future of healthcare.

This book covers the latest research on porous materials at the submicron scale and inspires readers to better understand the porosity of materials, as well as to develop innovative new materials. A comprehensive range of materials are covered, including carbon-based and organic-based porous materials, porous anodic alumina, silica, and titania-based sol-gel materials. The fabrication, characterization, and applications of these materials are all explored, with applications ranging from sensors, thermoelectrics, catalysis, energy storage, to photovoltaics. Also of practical use for readers are chapters that describe the basics of porous silicon fabrication and its use in optical sensing and drug delivery applications; how thermal transport is affected in porous materials; how to model diffusion in porous materials; and a unique chapter on an innovative spectroscopic technique used to characterize materials' porosity. This is an ideal book for graduate students, researchers, and professionals who work with porous materials.

Abstract: Electrode architectures with large capacity and good stability are exceedingly desired but remain an intriguing challenge for energy storage applications such as on-chip integrated microbatteries, where there is a grand need for high-energy and high-power three-dimensional (3D) electrodes to replace the conventional planar electrodes. Here we report a highly efficient and durable lithium electrode based on 3D self-supported nanoporous tantalum pentoxide (Ta2 O5 ) film. The Ta2 O5 film is prepared by electrochemically anodizing tantalum metal in ammonium fluoride electrolyte and subsequent thermal annealing at 450 °C in argon atmosphere, which does not crystallize the film but gives rise to significant amount of oxygen deficiency. The Ta2 O5 film exhibits a high lithium capacity of ~ 480 mAh g −1 and remarkable cycling stability over 8000 cycles at a rate of 5 C, which could be attributed to improved transport kinetics and structural integrity as a result of amorphous structure, oxygen deficiency, and nanoporous architecture. Graphical abstract: Material strategies of structural disordering and oxygen defect were collaboratively applied to electrochemically grown nanoporous Ta2 O5 films. This engineered Ta2 O5 film exhibits unique features well suitable for rapid and sustainable Li storage. Highlights: Self-organized nanoporous Ta2 O5 films were directly grown on Ta substrate. Materials engineering of structural disordering and oxygen deficiency was applied. Engineered Ta2 O5 films exhibit a stable and robust Li storage performance. Lithium reaction mechanism is probed by spectroscopic analysis.
