The book covers the functional significance and properties of erythrocytes, their generation, senescence, and suicidal death. It further summarizes knowledge about hormones influencing erythrocyte formation including erythropoietin as well as disorders affecting and involving erythrocytes such as anemia, malaria, and sepsis. This seminal work forms a unique reference on the most abundant cell type in mammals and will be an invaluable resource for students in the life sciences.

Leukocytes play an integral role in the pathogenesis of different inflammatory disorders. Recent results indicate that leukocytes are also involved in conditions that had not formerly been associated with a cytotoxic effect by leukocytes. In 27 chapters by leading investigators, this book reviews recent research on leukocyte adhesion and microvascular kinetics. Detailed descriptions of adhesive glycoproteins expressed on the surface of leukocytes and endothelial cells are given together with summaries of the current state of leukocyte rheology, kinetics and entrapment in microvessels. Since leukocytes reach all organs, the mechanisms described in this volume may apply to a wide range of cardiovascular disorders. A variety of important inflammatory and circulatory disorders are discussed including cerebral and coronary ischemia, shock, atherogenesis, chronic venous insufficiency, gastric ulcer and diabetic retinopathy. New concepts about the etiology of cardiovascular complications are presented, with emphasis on molecular, cellular, and microvascular mechanisms. The current state of endogenous anti-adhesive and pro-adhesive mediators is summarized, including interventions against leukocyte activation and adhesion.

Iron Physiology and Pathophysiology in Humans provides health professionals in many areas of research and practice with the most up-to-date and well-referenced volume on the importance of iron as a nutrient and its role in health and disease. This important new volume is the benchmark in the complex area of interrelationships between the essentiality of iron, its functions throughout the body, including its critical role in erythropoiesis, the biochemistry and clinical relevance of iron-containing enzymes and other molecules involved in iron absorption, transport and metabolism, he importance of optimal iron status on immune function, and links between iron and the liver, heart, brain and other organs. Moreover, the interactions between genetic and environmental factors and the numerous co-morbidities seen with both iron deficiency and iron overload in at risk populations are clearly delineated so that students as well as practitioners can better understand the complexities of these interactions. Key features of the volume include an in-depth index and recommendations and practice guidelines are included in relevant chapters. The volume contains more than 100 detailed tables and informative figures and up-to-date references that provide the reader with excellent sources of information about the critical role of iron nutrition, optimal iron status and the adverse clinical consequences of altered iron homeostasis. Iron Physiology and Pathophysiology in Humans is an excellent new text as well as the most authoritative resource in the field.

I am prepared to predict that this monograph by Dr. Ernest Beutler will long serve as a model for monographs dealing with topics in medical science. I make this bold statement because we encounter in this work a degree of accuracy and authoritativeness well beyond that found in much of the medical literature. Too often, a monograph is simply a review of past reviews. The preparation of an exhaustive and completely accurate study such as the present one is a very laborious task; consequently, many authors make extensive use of the reviews of earlier writers assum ing that the latter have checked and evaluated each previously published report. Unfortunately, however, this assumption of validity has not al ways been correct. Dr. Beutler, who is a world authority on the subject about which he writes, was determined to make this book as correct and complete as possible, and, to this end, has checked all the original sources. Nowhere else will such an exhaustive bibliography be found. Moreover, he has also undertaken to reevaluate in the light of current knowledge material pub lished in earlier days. This he is eminently able to do, and in some in stances his investigations have resulted in new interpretations. The result is a volume that will be recognized as truly the last word on this important subject.

In front of you is the finished product of your work, the text of your contributions to the 2003 Dayton International Symposium on Cell Volume and Signal Transduction. As we all recall, this symposium brought together the Doyens of Cellular and Molecular Physiology as well as aspiring young investigators and students in this field. It became a memorable event in an illustrious series of International Symposia on Cell Volume and Signaling. This series, started by Professors Vladimir Strbák, Florian Lang and Monte Greer in Smolenice, Slovakia in 1997 and continued by Professors Rolf Kinne, Florian Lang and Frank Wehner in Berlin in 2000, is projected for 2005 in Copenhagen to be hosted by our colleague, Professor Else Hoffmann and her team. We dearly miss Monte Greer to whom this symposium was dedicated and addressed so eloquently by Vladimir Strbák in his Dedication to Monte. Monte and I became friends in Smolenice and had begun to discuss the 2003 meeting only a few days before his tragic accident in 2002. There are others who were not with us, and we missed them, too. We would not have been able to succeed in this event without the unflagging support of our higher administration at Wright State University, the NIDDKD of the National Institute of Health, and the Fuji Medical System (see Acknowledgments).
