Written by two experts who have dedicated their careers to quality improvement, Escape the Improvement Trap: Five Ingredients Missing in Most Improvement Recipes separates itself from other improvement books by looking at why most companies rarely achieve anything more than an average level of improvement maturity. They identify five critical ingredients required for successful improvement: 1. A meaningful business value proposition and strategy that drives key improvement actions 2. An engaging environment where people can do their best work 3. A focus on meaningful metrics while avoiding irrelevant details 4. Process improvement efforts that maximize cross-functional process performance and foster deeper process understanding, innovation, and execution of best work practices 5. An executive mindset that focuses on customer value, people development, process performance, and business improvement outcomes, not solely on savings The authors consider a variety of situations at Independence Enterprise, a fictional company, based on their own very real experiences. They elaborate on the principles that should come into play, look at what Independence Enterprise is doing right and wrong, and suggest deployment actions to help you apply the principles to your own organization.

Obesity is not simply weight gain nor is it a cosmetic or fitness issue. Your goal is to reduce the hazardous and ugly fats that surround your abdomen and organs, deep within your belly that put you at risk for degenerative diseases such as heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, cancer, gout, osteoarthritis and others. There is no quick fix to fat loss, only prevention, as obesity is a lifestyle disease. It took you years of poor eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle to make you fat. Fat loss is therefore not an event, a program (dieting) nor merely a number you see on the weighing scale or your BMI. A pair of “loose pants” is a better indicator of fat loss. In essence, if you lost weight without reducing your waist circumference, you haven't done much for yourself. To escape from the obesity trap, counting calories, dieting or cutting fat out of your diet or starvation will not help. Instead, to lose fat, you need to know how the body stores and burns fat. You need to incorporate certain lifestyle changes to mobilize your hormones to co-operate with the body to burn fat to overcome your body’s resistance to permanent fat loss. That is what this book is all about.

Compare global experiences during the balance sheet recessionand find out what is needed for a full recovery The Escape from Balance Sheet Recession and the QE Trapdetails the many hidden dangers remaining as the world slowlyrecovers from the balance sheet recession of 2008. Author andleading economist Richard Koo explains the unique political andeconomic pitfalls that stand in the way of recovery from this raretype of recession that was largely overlooked by economists. Kooanticipated the current predicament in the West long before othersand issued warnings in his previous books: Balance SheetRecession and The Holy Grail of Macroeconomics. This newbook illustrates how history is repeating itself in Europe whilethe United States, which learnt from the Japanese experience, isdoing better by avoiding the fiscal cliff. However, because of theliberal dosage of quantitative easing already implemented, theUnited States, the United Kingdom, and Japan may face a treacherouspath to normalcy in what Koo calls the QE Trap. He argues that itis necessary to understand balance sheet recession in order toresolve the Eurozone crisis, particularly the competitivenessproblems. Koo issues warnings against those who are too ready toargue for structural reforms when the problems are actually withbalance sheets. He re-examines Japan's two decades of experienceswith this rare recession and offers an insider view on theAbenomics. On China, readers will gain a very different historicalperspective as Koo argues that western commentators have forgottentheir own history when they talk about the re-balancing of theChinese economy. Learn from Japan which experienced the same predicamentafflicting the West fifteen years earlier Discover how unwinding of quantitative easing will affect theUnited States, the United Kingdom, Japan, as well as the emergingworld Examine solutions to the Eurozone problems caused by twobalance sheet recessions eight years apart Gain insight into China's problems from the West's ownexperiences with urbanisation Koo, who developed the concept of balance sheet recession basedon Japan's experience, took the revolution in macroeconomicsstarted by John Maynard Keynes in 1936 to a new height. TheEscape from Balance Sheet Recession and the QE Trap offers theworld cure for balance sheet recession.

We show that cross-country differences in the underlying volatility and persistence of macroeconomic shocks help explain two historical regularities in sovereign borrowing: the existence of "vicious" circles of borrowing-and-default ("default traps"), as well as the fact that recalcitrant sovereigns typically face higher interest spreads on future loans rather than outright market exclusion. We do so in a simple model where output persistence is coupled with asymmetric information between borrowers and lenders about the borrower's output process, implying that a decision to default reveals valuable information to lenders about the borrower's future output path. Using a broad cross-country database spanning over a century, we provide econometric evidence corroborating the model's main predictions-namely, that countries with higher output persistence and conditional volatility of transient shocks face higher spreads and thus fall into default traps more easily, whereas higher volatility of permanent output tends to dampen these effects.
