This is the second book of short stories about G. K. Chesterton’s fictional detective. Father Brown is a short, nondescript Catholic Priest with shapeless clothes and a large umbrella who has an uncanny insight into human evil. His methods, unlike those of his near contemporary Sherlock Holmes, although based on observation of details often unnoticed by others, tended to be intuitive rather than deductive. Although clearly devout, he always emphasizes rationality: despite his religiousness and his belief in God and miracles, he manages to see the perfectly ordinary, natural explanation of the problem. He is a devout, educated and "civilized" clergyman, who is totally familiar with contemporary and secular thought and behaviour. His character was thought to be based on Father John O’Connor, a parish priest in Bradford, Yorkshire. Aeterna Press

The fourth collection of Father Brown stories featuring the ingenious amateur detective. Ahead of a new series of the popular BBC adaptation starring Mark Williams, all five of Chesterton's original Father Brown books have been republished with charming and collectible Penguin covers. 'You see, I had murdered them all myself ... I had thought out exactly how a thing like that could be done, and in what style or state of mind a man could really do it. And when I was quite sure that I felt exactly like the murderer myself, of course I knew who he was.' Unassuming super-sleuth Father Brown has such brilliant powers of deduction that he knows more about crime than the criminals themselves. In this fourth volume of stories, the shabby priest unravels the most baffling conundrums involving, among others, a flying fish, a man with two beards and the Worst Crime in the World. G. K. Chesterton was born in 1874. He attended the Slade School of Art, where he appears to have suffered a nervous breakdown, before turning his hand to journalism. A prolific writer throughout his life, his best- known books include The Napoleon of Notting Hill (1904), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1922), The Man Who Was Thursday (1908) and the Father Brown stories. Chesterton converted to Roman Catholicism in 1922 and died in 1938. 'Chesterton knew how to make the most of a detective story' Jorge Luis Borges

His diminutive presence disguises a powerful intellect and ability to solve the strangest crimes in the most fascinating manner. This collection of stories draws upon all five Father Brown books and demonstrates the considerable range of those tales. From the unparalleled invention of "The Blue Cross" to the bizarre mystery of "The Blast of the Book", these stories contain as much wisdom as they do wonder.

IT is to be feared that about a hundred detective stories have begun with the discovery that an American millionaire has been murdered; an event which is, for some reason, treated as a sort of calamity. This story, I am happy to say, has to begin with a murdered millionaire; in one sense, indeed, it has to begin with three murdered millionaires, which some may regard as an cmbarras de richesse. But it was chiefly this coincidence or continuity of criminal policy that took the whole affair out of the ordinary run of criminal cases and made it the extraordinary problem that it was. Father Brown is featured in a series of short stories where he solves mysteries and crimes using his intuition and keen understanding of human nature. The character was loosely based by Chesterton on Father John O'Connor (1870–1952), a parish priest in Bradford, who was involved in Chesterton's conversion to Catholicism in 1922. This complete collection contains all the favourite Father Brown stories, showing a quiet wit and compassion that has endeared him to many, whilst solving his mysteries by a mixture of imagination and a sympathetic worldliness in a totally believable manner.

The small Catholic priest at his best again! "The Wisdom of Father Brown" is full of tales of crime and discovery, clues and false leads and all the rest of the thrilling material which will make any normal human being sit up and keep on sitting up long past the proper hour for bed. The stories deal with the different strata of society, from the ventriloquist (in a London lodging house, who was found tied and apparently gagged, but instead of being the victim of a supposed murderer, was simply interrupted in his secret practice of new tricks) to the mysterious death of a celebrated actress almost in the presence of her five suitors, and the death of a German prince in his forest. Each story is utterly different from the others and each is told with the author's gift to create atmosphere and to keep the reader intensely entertained.
