Advances in the flavonoid field have been nothing short of spectacular over the last 20 years. While the medical field has noticed flavonoids for their potential antioxidant, anticancer and cardioprotectant characteristics, growers and processors in plant sciences have utilized flavonoid biosynthesis and the genetic manipulation of the flavonoid pathway in plants to improve the nutritional and ornamental value of crops. Flavonoids: Chemistry, Biochemistry and Applications covers each class of flavonoid and presents the historic advances made in flavonoid research since the 1994 publication of an earlier text, Flavonoids Advances in Research Since 1986. This book details the analytical techniques scientists have used to achieve an improved understanding of flavonoid structures and functions as well as advances in the genetic manipulation of the flavonoid pathway, and the discovery of many new flavonoids. It indicates which techniques are best suited for the isolation and structure determination of flavonoids and whether the structures are novel. While explaining how to evaluate the flavonoid content in food and beverages, the book reveals the biotechnological advances that have allowed nutritionists and plant physiologists to assess the possible effects of flavonoids. As interest regarding the impact and health benefits of flavonoids continues to grow, Flavonoids: Chemistry, Biochemistry and Applications reflects the continuing commitment of flavonoid researchers to the improvement of human health and provides the most comprehensive, up-to-date source of information for all known flavonoids.

The tools used in scientific research are constantly changing and HPLC with photodiode array detection technique has become an important and popular technology used in studies such as plant extract analysis, drug discovery and development, the monitoring of manufacturing processes and quality assurance. The HPLC/photodiode array technique is also an important base tool of pure science. The authors have provided a compilation of valuable and unique reference material, gathered using strictly controlled conditions, and have developed theoretical rules that will aid users of this technique in the identification of the structures of the titled compound types. These compound types are widely encountered in bioactive plant components. The book will have appeal not only to academic chemists but also for example to biologists, food technologists, pharmacologists, pharmacists, the health supplements industry and the colourant industry. To our knowledge this is the first book of its kind to present and interpret a compilation of actual spectra of a series of authentic compounds, measured under identical and defined conditions that practitioners can use for direct comparison with their own data.

In recent years there has been an unprecedented expansion of knowledge about anthocyanins pigments. Indeed, the molecular genetic control of anthocyanins biosynthesis is now one of the best understood of all secondary metabolic pathways. There have also been substantial improvements in analytical technology that have led to the discovery of novel anthocyanin compounds. Armed with this knowledge and the tools for genetic engineering, plant breeders are now introducing vibrant new colors into horticultural crops. The food industry has also benefited from the resurgence of interest in anthocyanins. A greater understanding of the chemistry of these pigments has led to improved methods for stabilizing the color of anthocyanins extracts, so that they are more useful as food colorings. Methods for the bulk production of anthocyanins from cell cultures have been optimized for this purpose. Possible benefits to human health from the ingestion of anthocyanin-rich foods have also been a major feature of the recent scientific literature. Anthocyanins are remarkably potent antioxidants, and their ingestion has been postulated to stave off the effects of oxidative stress. These pigments, especially in conjunction with other flavonoids, have been associated with reductions in the incidence and severity of many other non-infectious diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and certain cancers. An industry is developing around anthocyanins as nutritional supplements. Finally, there has been significant progress in our understanding of the benefits of anthocyanins to plants themselves. Originally considered an extravagance without a purpose, anthocyanins are now implicated in multifarious vital functions. These include the attraction of pollinators and frugivores, aposematic defense from herbivores, and protection from environmental stressors such as strong light, UVB, drought, and free radical attacks. Anthocyanins are evidently highly versatile, and enormously useful to plants. This book covers all aspects of the biosynthesis and function of anthocyanins (and related compounds such as proanthocyanidins) in plants, and their applications in agriculture, food products, and human health. Featured areas include their relevance to: * Plant stress * Flower and fruit color * Human health * Wine quality and health attributes * Food colorants and ingredients * Cell culture production systems * The pastoral sector

Plants and plant-derived compounds and drugs are becoming moreand more popular with increasing numbers of scientists researchingplant analysis. The quality control of herbal drugs is alsobecoming essential to avoid severe health problems, and in thefuture many more new drugs will be developed from plantsources. This three-volume Handbook, featuring 47 detailed review articles,is unique as it deals with chemical and biological methodologiesfor plant analysis. It presents the most important and mostaccurate methods which are available for plant analysis. This comprehensive work is divided into six sections asfollows: Sample preparation and identification – discussingplant selection and collection, followed by extraction and samplepreparation methodologies. Extraction and sample preparation methodologies Instrumentation for chemical analysis - severalinstrumentations for chemical plant analysis are presented with anemphasis on hyphenated techniques, e.g. the coupling between HPLCand mass spectroscometry, and HPLC with NMR. Strategies for selective classes of compounds –coverage of the most interesting classes of compounds such aspolysaccharides, saponins, cardiotonic glycosides, alkaloids, terpenoids, lipids, volatile compounds and polyphenols (flavonoids, xanthones, coumarins, naphthoquinones, anthraquinones, proanthocyanidins, etc.). Biological Analysis - includes phenotyping, DNA barcodingtechniques, transcriptome analysis , microarray, metabolomics andproteomics. Drugs from Plants – covers the screening of plantextracts and strategies for the quick discovery of novelbioactive natural products.
