The Ford GT40 is one of the most famous of all sports racing cars. Built by Ford to challenge the supremacy of Ferrari at Le Mans, the GT40 first raced in 1964, and went on to win Le Mans four times in a row, from 1966 to 1969. Here, in this new Haynes Manual, is a unique perspective on what it takes to own, restore and maintain a GT40, as well as an insight into the engineering and construction of this legendary racing car.

Many argue that the Ford GT40 is the classic racing car of its era, conceived to rewrite the rulebook at LeMans by taking on -- and beating -- the hitherto all-dominant Ferraris. In this expanded edition, the author recalls the GT40's six epic seasons of racing and the legacy that it left on international motorsports. All-new contemporary color photography is complemented by painstakingly researched GT40 documentation, including: -- Ownership and identification records for each individual car -- A race record listing the fate of all GT40s entered in major events -- Technical specifications for the six main variants of the GT40 theme -- A chronicle of GT40s built and kitted out to be driven on the road -- models which are today among the most valuable of exotic sports cars The GT40 represents a significant chapter in what many race fans consider the golden age of postwar auto racing. This is the GT40's story of fierce competition, dedication, tragedy, and, ultimately, of complete and repeated success.

If a racing car could disappoint an entire nation, that was the dramatic fate of Britain's BRM .Few cars of any kind have a more exotic and exciting reputation among enthusiasts than the first BRM, a 16-cylinder wonder machine, heralded as a certain race winner and backed by the nation's motor industry, it was British Racing Motor's bid to put the UK at the top of the Grand Prix series. It did come good -- producing more than 500 horsepower -- but only after the Formula 1 for which it was built had expired.

The Ferrari 512 marked the company's return to the World Sports Car Championship, and despite being a late entrant, the 512 was a formidable race car. Such was Ferrari's breadth and depth in motorsport that they were able to mix and match components relatively quickly and the new car was revealed at the 1969 Turin Motor Show although it was only ready to race the following year. Mauro Forghieri, under whose direction the 512 was developed, used a semi-monocoque chassis similar to that of the 612 P Can-Am car, and the car was fitted with a 5-litre V12 engine. The extremely handsome, muscular body was designed by Pininfarina and was available in both sports coupe and spyder format.

Part-time racer and chicken farmer Carroll Shelby ordered a chassis from AC Cars in England in 1961, and asked them to install a Ford V8 engine in it. The AC Ace was fitted with the same rear diff as that used in the Jaguar E-type, and so when the car arrived in the Shelby workshop, it proved easy to modify thanks to the simple AC layout.
