As the amount of information in biology expands dramatically, it becomes increasingly important for textbooks to distill the vast amount of scientific knowledge into concise principles and enduring concepts. As with previous editions, Molecular Biology of the Cell, Sixth Edition accomplishes this goal with clear writing and beautiful illustrations. The Sixth Edition has been extensively revised and updated with the latest research in the field of cell biology, and it provides an exceptional framework for teaching and learning. The entire illustration program has been greatly enhanced.Protein structures better illustrate structure–function relationships, icons are simpler and more consistent within and between chapters, and micrographs have been refreshed and updated with newer, clearer, or better images. As a new feature, each chapter now contains intriguing openended questions highlighting “What We Don’t Know,” introducing students to challenging areas of future research. Updated end-of-chapter problems reflect new research discussed in the text, and these problems have been expanded to all chapters by adding questions on developmental biology, tissues and stem cells, pathogens, and the immune system.

Now in its fifth edition Biochemistry and Molecular Biology features a new author team, who have retained the much-praised clarity of previous editions, while adding a more biomedical focus and incorporating a discussion of recent developments in research. A new chapter on the general principles of nutrition emphasises the key principles underlying complex metabolic pathways, enabling students to appreciate an integrated view of human metabolism and nutrition. Also new to the fifth edition, a chapter on the control of gene expression reflects ourincreasing understanding of the importance and power of gene regulation. With an integrated approach covering both biochemistry and molecular biology, complemented by frequent diagrams and clear explanations, and all presented in a broader cellular context, this text is the perfect introduction for any student new to the subject. The second edition of this book on lipids, lipoprotein and membrane biochemistry has two major objectives - to provide an advanced textbook for students in these areas of biochemistry, and to summarise the field for scientists pursuing research in these and related fields. Since the first edition of this book was published in 1985 the emphasis on research in the area of lipid and membrane biochemistry has evolved in new directions. Consequently, the second edition has been modified to include four chapters on lipoproteins. Moreover, the other chapters have been extensively updated and revised so that additional material covering the areas of cell signalling by lipids, the assembly of lipids and proteins into membranes, and the increasing use of molecular biological techniques for research in the areas of lipid, lipoprotein and membrane biochemistry have been included. Each chapter of the textbook is written by an expert in the field, but the chapters are not simply reviews of current literature. Rather, they are written as current, readable summaries of these areas of research which should be readily understandable to students and researchers who have a basic knowledge of general biochemistry. The authors were selected for their abilities both as researchers and as communicators. In addition, the editors have carefully coordinated the chapters so that there is little overlap, yet extensive cross-referencing among chapters.
