First year, undergraduate, mathematics students in Japan have for many years had the opportunity of a unique experience---an introduction, at an elementary level, to some very advanced ideas in mathematics from one of the leading mathematicians of the world. Michio Kuga’s lectures on Group Theory and Differential Equations are a realization of two dreams---one to see Galois groups used to attack the problems of differential equations---the other to do so in such a manner as to take students from a very basic level to an understanding of the heart of this fascinating mathematical problem. From elementary ideas to cartoons to funny examples (considered "undignified" by many of his colleagues,) the author provided his students with a book that was considered "hip" just to own, to be seen reading, and perhaps to be learning from. Many of his students went on to become good mathematicians, having fallen into the "crevasse" of mathematical curiosity. English reading students now have the opportunity to enjoy this lively presentation and to follow the mind of an imaginative and creative mathematician into a world---not really so far removed---of enduring mathematical creations.

## Lectures On Differential Galois Theory

Author : Andy R. Magid
ISBN : 9780821870044
Genre : Mathematics
File Size : 88. 41 MB
Format : PDF, ePub

Differential Galois theory studies solutions of differential equations over a differential base field. In much the same way that ordinary Galois theory is the theory of field extensions generated by solutions of (one variable) polynomial equations, differential Galois theory looks at the nature of the differential field extension generated by the solutions of differential equations. An additional feature is that the corresponding differential Galois groups (of automorphisms of the extension fixing the base and commuting with the derivation) are algebraic groups. This book deals with the differential Galois theory of linear homogeneous differential equations, whose differential Galois groups are algebraic matrix groups. In addition to providing a convenient path to Galois theory, this approach also leads to the constructive solution of the inverse problem of differential Galois theory for various classes of algebraic groups. Providing a self-contained development and many explicit examples, this book provides a unique approach to differential Galois theory and is suitable as a textbook at the advanced graduate level.

## New Foundations In Mathematics

Author : Garret Sobczyk
ISBN : 9780817683856
Genre : Mathematics
File Size : 28. 91 MB
Format : PDF, ePub

The first book of its kind, New Foundations in Mathematics: The Geometric Concept of Number uses geometric algebra to present an innovative approach to elementary and advanced mathematics. Geometric algebra offers a simple and robust means of expressing a wide range of ideas in mathematics, physics, and engineering. In particular, geometric algebra extends the real number system to include the concept of direction, which underpins much of modern mathematics and physics. Much of the material presented has been developed from undergraduate courses taught by the author over the years in linear algebra, theory of numbers, advanced calculus and vector calculus, numerical analysis, modern abstract algebra, and differential geometry. The principal aim of this book is to present these ideas in a freshly coherent and accessible manner. New Foundations in Mathematics will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students of mathematics and physics who are looking for a unified treatment of many important geometric ideas arising in these subjects at all levels. The material can also serve as a supplemental textbook in some or all of the areas mentioned above and as a reference book for professionals who apply mathematics to engineering and computational areas of mathematics and physics.

## Problems In Analytic Number Theory

Author : Maruti Ram Murty
ISBN : 0387951431
Genre : Mathematics
File Size : 38. 2 MB
Format : PDF, ePub, Docs

This book gives a problem-solving approach to the difficult subject of analytic number theory. It is primarily aimed at graduate and senior undergraduate students. The goal is to give a rapid introduction of how analytic methods are used to study the distribution of prime numbers. The book also includes an introduction to p-adic analytic methods. It is ideal for a first course in analytic number theory.

## Number Theory Fermat S Dream

Author : Kazuya Kato
ISBN : 082180863X
Genre : Mathematics
File Size : 57. 44 MB
Format : PDF, Mobi

This is the English translation of the original Japanese book. In this volume, Fermat's Dream'', core theories in modern number theory are introduced. Developments are given in elliptic curves, $p$-adic numbers, the $\zeta$-function, and the number fields. This work presents an elegant perspective on the wonder of numbers. Number Theory 2 on class field theory, and Number Theory 3 on Iwasawa theory and the theory of modular forms, are forthcoming in the series.

## 40 Days Of Dating

Author : Jessica Walsh
ISBN : 9781613127155
Genre : Self-Help
File Size : 30. 51 MB
Format : PDF

When New York–based graphic designers and long-time friends Timothy Goodman and Jessica Walsh found themselves single at the same time, they decided to try an experiment. The old adage says that it takes 40 days to change a habit—could the same be said for love? So they agreed to date each other for 40 days, record their experiences in questionnaires, photographs, videos, texts, and artworks, and post the material on a website they would create for this purpose. What began as a small experiment between two friends became an Internet sensation, drawing 5 million unique (and obsessed) visitors from around the globe to their site and their story since it was launched in July 2013. 40 Days of Dating: An Experiment is a beautifully designed, expanded look at the experiment and the results, including a great deal of material that never made it onto the site, such as who they were as friends and individuals before the 40 days and who they have become since. Note: 40 Days of Dating has a special binding that allows it to open very flat by attaching the endpapers to the inside covers.
