Bangalore is a metropolitan city and its main challenge focuses on water scarcity. Its only potable source of water is the Cauvery water pipe system, which poses a demand- supply gap as a result of conveyance losses, due to long distances and higher elevations. The other alternative sources are groundwater and wetlands . These cannot be used for drinking purposes as most of it is contaminated from leakage of sewer pipes. The lakes are used as solid waste dumping grounds and contaminated by sewage water leading to an unhygienic condition. The lack of maintenance led to decrease in number of lakes and encroachment of land for urban development. The urban sprawl and unsustainable practices has degraded the water quality and depleted the quantity of groundwater resources. Bangalore city receives an average annual rainfall of 36.5 inches and has 128 average rainy days in a year. The heavy rains result in flooding due to increased impervious surfaces and inadequate infrastructure for storm water and sewage water. In spite of sufficient capacity of sewage treatment plants available, only 42 percent of the waste water is treated and recycled. So, an Integrated water resource management approach is required to reduce the drought and flooding in Bangalore city. There is a variation in distribution patterns of drinking water to the rich and poor, to core and peri-urban regions. Rainwater harvesting is a mandate since 2009 for new construction. Increase in water prices and rainwater harvesting are not the only solution for water shortages. Important initiatives such as fixing of leakage, restoration of watersheds, controlling population growth, limiting the resource consumption to the biological carrying capacity with efficient resource use and effective waste management. This would reduce the vulnerability of natural capital and promote a healthy ecosystem and human well-being for the present and future generations.
