Working, learning and living in groups is a central feature of humans, and therefore the study of groups - called group dynamics - is a vibrant academic field, overlapping diverse areas such as psychology, sociology, business studies and political science. It is also highly relevant to language education because the success of classroom learning is very much dependent on how students relate to each other, what the classroom climate is like, what roles the teacher and the learners play and, more generally, how well students can cooperate and communicate with each other. This innovative book addresses these issues and offers practical advice on how to manage language learner groups in a way that they develop into cohesive and productive teams. Educators interested in communicative language teaching will particularly welcome this book as a useful guide in their day-to-day teaching practice.

Until now, relatively little research on interpersonal processes and group dynamics addressed the educational domain, particularly second language education. This book fills the gap by synthesizing diverse aspects of interpersonal and group psychology and exploring conscious and unconscious processes that affect learning and teaching. Drawing on humanistic, social, and clinical psychology, it addresses unconscious communication among people, group development, class climate, psychological characteristics of effective classroom groups, leadership roles, interpersonal attraction and conflicts, and the relationship of these to learner autonomy and collaborative learning. The authors examine the contributions of the mental health branches of counseling and clinical psychology to our understanding of how teachers, learners and a variety of figures who many never enter the classroom interact with each other to make second language learning more or less effective. In particular, the authors show how the unconscious ôscriptsö can cause unproductive conflict demotivation and eventual aversion to language learning. Moreover, the text shows how learning can be facilitated by appropriate use of interpersonal dynamics. Due to its interdisciplinary nature, this book will be of interest to teacher educators and practicing teachers, researchers, undergraduate and graduate students, school administrators and supervisors of educational programs, and many learners themselves. In addition, since the main focus of the book is the affective foundation of the teaching/learning process, this material will be relevant to non-language teachers and clinical practitioners interested in educational issues, as well as graduate students in training for those professions.

This book investigates and analyzes the way in which factors such as communication apprehension, self-perceived communicative competence and group dynamics influence the communicative behavior of a foreign-language learner. It also focuses on interpersonal communication, group communication and public speaking. Using selected models it characterizes and analyzes all types of communication with reference to communication in the language classroom, with a particular emphasis on the foreign-language context. The author also presents some conclusions and implications for both language teachers and language learners, as well as offering suggestions for further research in the field of classroom communication. The results of the study serve as a point of reference for teachers interested in the construct of willingness to communicate and other communication variables related to the issue of communication in a foreign language. The work also raises teachers' awareness of individual learner differences in the context of communication in the foreign-language classroom.

"Secondary education is the final stage of compulsory education, preceded by primary education and followed by higher education. It is characterised by transition from the typically compulsory, comprehensive primary education for minors to the optional, selective tertiary, "post-secondary", or "higher" education (e.g., university, vocational school) for adults. Depending on the system, schools for this period or a part of it may be called secondary schools, high schools, gymnasiums, lyceums, middle schools, colleges, vocational schools and preparatory schools, and the exact meaning of any of these varies between the systems...This new book presents the latest research in the field."--publisher website.

Through the words of more than 100 practising language teachers, The Experience of Language Teaching provides a detailed picture of teaching and learning in communicative classrooms. Using a teacher-generated framework it covers a range of aspects of classroom life: how teachers create environments suitable for language practice, how they get students 'on-side', how they manage tricky students, how they enhance the learning experience, how they develop and maintain a spirit of community. The book demonstrates how paying attention to both the learning and social needs of their class groups enables language teachers to behave in flexible ways that promote learning. This book will be of interest to teachers, teacher educators, researchers and to anyone interested in finding out what it is like to be a language teacher at the present time. The Experience of Language Teaching was winner of the Ben Warren International Trust House Prize in 2005.
