A moving middle-grade novel from the Newbery Honor author of Rules. When Lucy's family moves to an old house on a lake, Lucy tries to see her new home through her camera's lens, as her father has taught her -- he's a famous photographer, away on a shoot. Will her photos ever meet his high standards? When she discovers that he's judging a photo contest, Lucy decides to enter anonymously. She wants to find out if her eye for photography is really special -- or only good enough. As she seeks out subjects for her photos, Lucy gets to know Nate, the boy next door. But slowly the camera reveals what Nate doesn't want to see: his grandmother's memory is slipping away, and with it much of what he cherishes about his summers on the lake. This summer, Nate will learn about the power of art to show truth. And Lucy will learn how beauty can change lives...including her own.

Anyone born in Australia in the 1950Õs through to the 1960Õs is known as a baby boomer. It was a time when the land down-under was riding on the sheepÕs back and young people of the era were told to go forth and multiply in this the land of opportunity, a land of milk and honey. Half a Chance is the story of Stephen Martin a likeable jack-of-all-trades and his young wife Shelly. They are on an adventure of discovery on a sheep station in south western New South Wales before they move back towards the city where StephenÕs station and horse skills would be left behind in favour of more nefarious activities. He finds himself on struggle-street, in the early housing commission sprawl to the north of Melbourne, only able to find occasional work behind the wheel of a truck. His liking for a drink after work finds him mixing with the wrong crowd who would soon compromise both his family and his liberty.. The story is told in strong, no-holds-barred colloquial language of the time and begins with the arrival of their third child, their first boy Terry, born in 1952, and follows the family through 22 addresses in as many years. The story unfolds as all four children come of age wanting nothing more than to be free of StephenÕs addiction and his new love. As Terry reaches pubity he is left to fend for himself. The transition somehow appears normal until tragedy strikes and sends them all spinning off in different directions. Terry finds solace in sex and drugs and rock and roll through the late 60Õs and early 70Õs but also has to make a living and finds, by taking a few risks himself, Êhe can survive. Half a Chance asks many questions about what is normal in this era in Australia and answers just as many. It fills the generational gaps which are often overlooked. It will make you laugh and may make you cry, but one thing for certain, you will not want to put it down. The author draws on a lifetime of journalism which saw his work published in newspapers and magazines all over the world and explains an understanding of how things really are, in the real world. So, what is normal?

A heart-rending but uplifting story of the human spirit’s ability to prevail. From the day he is five-years-old and dropped off at his foster home of the next eleven years, Stephen is mentally and physically tortured. No one in the system can help him. No one can tell him if he has a family. No one can tell him why, with obvious African-American features, he has the last name of Klakowicz. Along the way, a single faint light comes only from a neighbor’s small acts of kindness and caring—and a box of books. From one of those books he learns that he has to fight in any way he can—for victory is in the battle. His victory is to excel in school. Against all odds, the author succeeded. He attended college, graduated, became a successful corporate executive, and married a wonderful woman with whom he established a loving family of his own. Through it, he dug voraciously through records and files and found his history, his birth family—and the ultimate disappointment as some family members embrace him, but others reject him. Readers won’t be the same after reading this powerful story. They will share in the hurts and despair but also in the triumph against daunting obstacles. They will share this story with their family, with their friends, with their neighbors.

A kid who considers himself an epic fail discovers the transformative power of love when he deals with adoption in this novel from Cynthia Kadohata, winner of the Newbery Medal (Kira-Kira) and the National Book Award (The Thing About Luck). Eleven-year-old Jaden is adopted, and he knows he’s an “epic fail.” That’s why his family is traveling to Kazakhstan to adopt a new baby—to replace him, he’s sure. And he gets it. He is incapable of stopping his stealing, hoarding, lighting fires, aggressive running, and obsession with electricity. He knows his parents love him, but he feels...nothing. When they get to Kazakhstan, it turns out the infant they’ve traveled for has already been adopted, and literally within minutes are faced with having to choose from six other babies. While his parents agonize, Jaden is more interested in the toddlers. One, a little guy named Dimash, spies Jaden and barrels over to him every time he sees him. Jaden finds himself increasingly intrigued by and worried about Dimash. Already three years old and barely able to speak, Dimash will soon age out of the orphanage, and then his life will be as hopeless as Jaden feels now. For the first time in his life, Jaden actually feels something that isn’t pure blinding fury, and there’s no way to control it, or its power. From camels rooting through garbage like raccoons, to eagles being trained like hunting dogs, to streets that are more pothole than pavement, the vivid depictions in Half a World Away create “an inspiring story that celebrates hope and second chances” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).
