The IMLEM Plus edition of Hard Math is designed for students participating in both the Intermediate Math League of Eastern Massachusetts and Mathcounts(r). The topics align with modern middle school curricula: fractions, decimals, percents, prime factorization, plane and spatial geometry, probability, statistics, combinatorics, algebra, modular arithmetic, etc. But Hard Math challenges students to develop a deeper understanding: it asks much harder questions than standard texts and teaches the material and problem solving strategies students need to attack them. For example, rather than asking students to write 2/5 as a decimal, it might ask students to use the fact that 99999 = 9 × 41 × 271 to find the tenth digit in the decimal expansion for 1/271. (It might ask this, but never actually does.) The organization is designed to serve IMLEM students' needs: the first five chapters cover exactly what students should learn for each of IMLEM's monthly contests. But the text can also serve students preparing for other math contests or as general enrichment. The IMLEM Plus edition of Hard Math can be used interchangeably with the IMLEM edition. The only difference is that the IMLEM Plus edition contains an extra chapter covering topics that do not appear on IMLEM contests, but which the author feels are useful to know if a student wants to do very well on Mathcounts(r).Mathcounts(r) is a registered trademark of the Mathcounts Foundation, which was not involved in the production of, and does not endorse, this book.

The textbook presents topics from the standard school curriculum in greater depth, asks harder questions, and discusses problem solving strategies. It is organized around the calendar of the Intermediate Math League of Eastern Massachusetts (IMLEM) and also provides a year-long course on what students need to know to do well on MathCounts(R). It can also serve as enrichment for any student who wishes that his or her math class were harder. This workbook contains more that 100 worksheets. Each contains challenging questions that students can use to solidify their understanding of a section of the textbook and stretch their problem solving abilities. The problems range from hard to very, very hard and are arranged by difficulty level. The workbook is designed for gifted students in grades 6-8. "Fun and highly formidable math problems and puzzles from noted puzzle creator Terry Stickels." — Window on Resources Two friends wish to meet for breakfast twice a month throughout the year. In how many ways can they choose those two days so that they never meet on consecutive days? You want to measure 30 seconds and you have two pieces of string, each of which burns for 40 seconds. How can you accomplish this without bending, folding, or cutting the strings? A positive whole number is divisible by 3 and also by 5. When the number is divided by 7, the remainder is 5. What is the smallest number that could work? These are but a few of this book's assembly of the most challenging puzzles imaginable ― and they require no background in higher math, just good thinking skills. Terry Stickels, a well-known puzzle-maker, has compiled 101 of some of the best and most entertaining problems ever published. All of the challenges, which range from probability puzzles to dice games, have two things in common: each offers the "Aha!" moment of discovery that puzzle-solvers love, and they're all fun. Complete solutions for all puzzles explain every detail.
