In the latter half of the 1950s a series of unusual events that started with a UFO encounter, continued with a near-death experience, and ended with unusual transformations of consciousness started me on a journey to Tibetan Buddhism. Several decades passed before I began to suspect that the Tibetan legend of Shambhala might tie these disparate events together. This book is the result.

The future is alongside us, sometimes closer, sometimes further away. Hidden Valleys starts from the perception that the human world is an eerie place, particularly in relation to its stories and dreams. It also starts from events that took place in North Yorkshire, in 1978. A work of philosophy, an account of experiences, and a biography of a year, it is simultaneously a challenging cultural analysis, drawing on novels, songs and films. It argues for lucidity over reason, becomings over conventional gender and familialism, groups over state politics, and for an escape to wider realities in place of the delusions of religion. Most centrally it breaks open a view of a futural dimension that coexists with the present, and which intrinsically involves a heightened awareness and evaluation of the planet, of women, and of the abstract. Inseparably it is also a detective investigation into the causes of the eerie human predicament. The book reaches the planetary by starting from a singular place, it reaches reality by starting from dreams, and it reaches the future by finding a doorway in the past.

This book is about the author’s unrevealed emotional experiences, which are manifest only by the poetic writings. The book’s metaphor is that of the Roman God, Janus, with the two faces of the God facing in opposite directions representing the two distinct perceptions of the emotional expressions of the author, the social, public face and the private, personal face. The book should connect with those people who, for whatever reason, choose not to reveal their inner thoughts and emotions, because some things should remain secret and private until it is safe or appropriate to make them known.

Ancient Polynesians knew how to build canoe boats that were sea worthy. To escape over crowding in places they lived, several, including families, would use a canoe boat to search for new places to live. They were excellent navigators, and skilled in making long voyages. On one such island, a group of Polynesians found the tyranny of their chief to be unbearable. Several times he had taken a son or daughter from a family to be sacrificed to the god of the fire mountain. In addition, he had established a large number of taboos that were repugnant to the people. This Chief of this island built a large canoe boat designed for warfare. When the wind blew against its two sails, it was very fast. At great risks to themselves, the group took the boat while everyone else was asleep. The speed of the boat prevented pursuers from catching them. The group had no preplanned destination, but after many cycles of the moon they discovered The Island of Palms and made it their new home. They inhabited the leeward side of the island, which had two beaches separated from each other by arms of lava that extended into the sea. There was a harbor between the two beaches. A very steep and heavily forested mountain stretched the entire length of the island. Because of its rugged terrain, no one on the island had found a way to climb it and get to the other side. Men had sailed to the other side of the island hoping to explore it, but were prevented from doing it by a coral reef.
