Selected for the Chief of Staff of the Air Force Reading List From Bill Yenne, author of the military histories Big Week and Aces High, comes the stirring true story of the Eighth Air Force in World War II. Less than a month after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Army formed its first air force designated to operate overseas, the Eighth. Within four months, they had set up base in England. Three months later, they were bombing German targets in occupied Europe. The Eighth was the first bomber command on either side to commit to strategic daylight bombing. It was a major change in tactics—and the men of the Eighth paid the price in both lives and blood. But it was that very sacrifice that led the Allies to victory. Hit the Target introduces readers to those who made the Eighth Air Force the formidable juggernaut it soon became. Men of all ranks, from General Tooey Spaatz, the hard-driving founding commander, to Colonel Jimmy Doolittle, the hero who led the first air raid on Japan, to Maynard “Snuffy” Smith, the irascible first airman in Europe to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, and Robert “Rosie” Rosenthal, who survived his time with the “Bloody Hundredth,” which lost airmen at a horrifying rate, and who went on to serve as a prosecutor at the Nuremberg Trials. The story of the Mighty Eighth is told through these men, whose careers paralleled the early history of aviation and who helped to revolutionize airborne warfare and win World War II. She has her friends back, has returned to equestrian training and she’s just about to turn eighteen. If only she didn’t have that Brady complication in her life, everything would be perfect. But not only is that complication still there, Brady’s become even harder to resist after Brooklyn’s time away from him; absence makes the heart grow fonder after all. Plus there’s that birthday gift he gave her that just about melted her heart. At least he’s not her coach while he’s recovering from his injury, so keeping her distance is somewhat easier. Target presents a unique approach to business and life, taking inspiration from the wisdom of the ancient Japanese martial art of archery - Kyudo. Kyudo has a particular teaching: Right shooting always results in a hit . This means that you shouldn t worry about simply hitting the target; instead, you should calmly focus your energy and willpower on proper mindset and form. In doing so, this right-minded shooting will naturally result in a hit. In the business world, we are all under the pressure of hitting sales targets, improving profit margins, increasing efficiency and maintaining relationships. The philosophy of Kyudo gives new perspectives and solutions to the struggles and opportunities that anyone may encounter in their business and career. Target stands as a relevant guide to our modern times. The Kyudo aphorisms have been passed from Japanese masters directly to the author, and have been put into practice for professional and personal situations.

This is the first anthology of Yuan-dynasty zaju (miscellaneous comedies) to introduce the genre to English-speaking readers exclusively through translations of the plays' fourteenth-century editions. Almost all previous translations of Yuan-dynasty zaju are based on late-Ming regularized editions that were heavily adapted for performance at the Ming imperial court and then extensively revised in the seventeenth century for the reading pleasure of Jiangnan literati. These early editions are based on leading actor scripts and contain arias, prose dialogue, and cue lines. They encompass a fascinating range of subject matter, from high political intrigue to commoner life and religious conversion. Crackling with raw emotion, violent imagery, and colorful language and wit, the zaju in this volume explore the consequences of loyalty and betrayal, ambition and enlightenment, and piety and drunkenness. The collection features seven of the twenty-six available untranslated zaju published in the fourteenth century, with a substantial introduction preceding each play and extensive annotations throughout. The editors also include translations of the Ming versions of four of the included plays and an essay that synthesizes recent Chinese and Japanese scholarship on the subject.
