English summary: Sigmund Mowinckel (1884-1965) is said to have been one of the most influential Old Testament scholars of the 20th century. In the first part of this book, Sigurd Hjelde describes his biography, primarily the history of his academic career, whereas in the second part he provides insights into the various aspects of his life's work. He focuses on his studies of the biblical Psalms, which he did on the basis of a consistent 'cult historical' approach and which was expressed most prominently in the frequently discussed theory of an annual enthronement festival for Yahweh in ancient Israel. In addition, the author also deals with Mowinckel's relationship to the church and to Christianity and his role as a teacher, a translator of the Bible and a Christian preacher.

Review: "While many dictionaries of economics are available for purchase, this title is unique because of its greater depth of treatment. It offers histories and backgrounds on a significant number of economic topics, not only for the United States but also for other countries and geographic regions. Beginning around 2003, the growth of interest in the genre of reality shows has dominated the field of television studies. However, concentrating on this genre has tended to sideline the even more significant emergence of the program format as a central mode of business and culture in the new television landscape. TV Formats Worldwide redresses this balance and heralds the emergence of an important, exciting, and challenging area of television studies. Topics explored include reality TV, makeover programs, sitcoms, talent shows, and fiction serials, as well as broadcaster management policies, production decision chains, and audience participation processes. This seminal work will be of considerable interest to media scholars worldwide.

Reality television is global. Transnational television companies and international distribution networks facilitate the worldwide circulation of popular shows; the 1990s in particular saw the growth of media companies that specialize in the development of reality television formats that are easily adaptable to local variations. While the industrial history of the global migrations of reality television is well established, there has been less consideration of the theoretical and methodological implications of this expansion. The Politics of Reality Television encompasses an international selection of expert contributions which consider the specific ways these migrations test our understanding of, and means of investigating, reality television across the globe. The book addresses a wide range of topics, including: -the global circulation and local adaptation of reality television formats and franchises -the production of fame and celebrity around hitherto "ordinary" people -the transformation of self under the public eye -the tensions between fierce loyalties to local representatives and imagined communities bonding across regional and ethnic divides -the struggle over the meanings and values of reality television across a range of national, regional, gender, class, and religious contexts. The Politics of Reality Television proposes ways in which we can think through the international dimensions of reality television in the context of highly mobile media, politics, and publics. It offers a global, comparative examination of reality television alongside empirical research about the genre, its producers, and consumers. This book will be of interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students on a range of Media and Television Studies courses, particularly those on the globalization of television and media, and reality television. Marwan M. Kraidy is Associate Professor of Global Communication at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. His books include Reality Television and Arab Politics: Contention in Public Life (2009) and Hybridity, or, The Cultural Logic of Globalization (2005). Katherine Sender is Associate Professor of Communication at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. Her books include Business not Politics: The Making of the Gay Market (2004) and Makeover Television and its Audiences (forthcoming).

Why is gender inseparable from pop songs? What can gender representations in musical performances mean? Why are there strong links between gender, sexuality and popular music? The sound of the voice, the mix, the arrangement, the lyrics and images, all link our impressions of gender to music. Numerous scholars writing about gender in popular music to date are concerned with the music industry’s impact on fans, and how tastes and preferences become associated with gender. This is the first collection of its kind to develop and present new theories and methods in the analysis of popular music and gender. The contributors are drawn from a range of disciplines including musicology, sociology, anthropology, gender studies, philosophy, and media studies, providing new reference points for studies in this interdisciplinary field. Stan Hawkins’s introduction sets out to situate a variety of debates that prompts ways of thinking and working, where the focus falls primarily on gender roles. Amongst the innovative approaches taken up in this collection are: queer performativity, gender theory, gay and lesbian agency, the female pop celebrity, masculinities, transculturalism, queering, transgenderism and androgyny. This Research Companion is required reading for scholars and teachers of popular music, whatever their disciplinary background.
