Robert Neville has witnessed the end of the world. The entire population has been obliterated by a vampire virus. Somehow, Neville survived. He must now struggle to make sense of everything that has happened and learn to protect himself against the vampires who hunt him constantly. He must, because perhaps there is nothing else human left. I Am Legend was a major influence in horror and brought a whole new thematic concept to apocalyptic literature. Several humanistic and emotional themes in this book blend the horror genre with traditional fiction: we see Neville as an emotional person, and observe as he suffers bouts of depression, dips into alcoholism and picks up his strength again to fight the vampiric bacteria that has infected (and killed off) most of humankind. Neville soon meets a woman, Ruth, (after three years alone), who seems to be uninfected and a lone survivor. The two become close and he learns from Ruth that the infected have learned to fight the disease...

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Comparative Literature, grade: 2,0, University of Dusseldorf "Heinrich Heine" (American Studies), course: The Virus as Political Metaphor in 20th Century American Literature and Film, language: English, abstract: It is difficult to imagine our world without monsters. Their hideous appearance and scary behavior became integrated in our lives and culture. No culture can live without monsters. Children at an early age fear monsters under their beds and adolescents fight against monsters in computer games. We read about them in fictional literature and see them in classic movies as well as new publications. Monsters have always played an important role in culture. But what are monsters? How do they find their way into our society and where do they come from? Not only are they defined by their deterrent appearance but also by qualities ascribed by the culture they appear in (cf. Murgatroyd 2007, p. 2). The anthropologist Jeffrey Jerome Cohen deals with monsters and their role in society. In his work called “Monster Theory” he proposes a method of understanding cultures through the monsters they invent by giving seven theses explaining the monster ́s characterizations (cf. Cohen, Jeffrey Jerome: Monster Culture (Seven Theses). In: Monster Theory. Reading Culture. Minneapolis 1996, p. 3f.). Cohen ́s second thesis “The Monster Always Escapes” will be of special interest to us. Also referring to Cohen ́s first thesis “The Monster ́s Body Is A Cultural Body” we will examine how monsters are born into society and how they keep on living within the frames of cultural, political and social relations. Afterwards we will apply Cohen ́s thesis to Richard Matheson ́s “I Am Legend”, a Science Fiction and horror novel, which deals with monsters in form of vampires. In Matheson ́s fictional work the protagonist Robert Neville, as the only human being, lives in a world of bloodthirsty vampires. Neville, trying to understand the germ which created the disease and to which he himself is immune, does scientific researches. He haunts the vampires and kills them, when ultimately he is captured by a pair of infected survivors. The novel is set in Los Angeles.

While there have been three adaptations of Richard Matheson's classic novel I AM LEGEND none of the scripts have followed the novel. Matheson wrote a script in the 1950s which did. It was purchased by Hammer Films in England. However, both the British and U.S. censor boards wanted extensive alterations that neither Matheson nor Hammer Films were willing to make. RICHARD MATHESON'S CENSORED AND UNPRODUCED I AM LEGEND SCREENPLAY is the script Matheson wrote and how he envisioned his novel being filmed. The book includes the script, history of the screenplay as well as the U.S. Censor Board letter outlining their objections.

Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel I Am Legend has spawned a series of iconic horror and science fiction films, including The Last Man on Earth (1964), The Omega Man (1971) and I Am Legend (2007). The compelling narrative of the last man on earth, struggling to survive a pandemic that has transformed the rest of humanity into monsters, has become an American myth. While the core story remains intact, filmmakers have transformed the details over time, reflecting changing attitudes about race and masculinity. This reexamination of Matheson’s novel situates the tale of one man’s conflicted attitude about killing racialized “others” within its orginal post–World War II context, engaging the question of post-traumatic stress disorder. The author analyzes the several film adaptations, with a focus on the casting and interpretations of protagonist Robert Neville.

From Richard Matheson, author of I Am Legend, comes a four-book bundle of his best thrillers. Revenge, murder, and horror abound in these stories of speculative fiction as the dark side of humanity is explored. I Am Legend: Sometimes referred to as the modern world’s first vampire novel, I Am Legend was the original inspiration for the film Night of the Living Dead, which spawned the zombie genre of films and literature. Telling the story of the last surviving man in Manhattan after a deadly pandemic that turned people into blood-sucking zombies, it’s a fascinating introduction to horror, zombie, and vampire genres. Someone Is Bleeding: Young novelist Dave Newton is instantly smitten when he meets blonde, beautiful Peggy. But Peggy has a past full of abuse and terror—and she’s involved with Jerry, a lawyer with mob connections and an old rival from Dave’s college days. Soon, Dave finds himself caught in a love triangle with Peggy and Jerry, desperate to win her affections. But when corpses begin to pile up in Peggy’s wake, Dave must face the truth that either Jerry is a mass murderer—or Peggy is. Ride the Nightmare: At 32, Chris Martin lives a conventional life. He’s married with a daughter, runs his own small business, and is working to save up money for a bigger home with his wife, Helen. He is happy and content with this staid but comfortable existence—until a secret from his past threatens to undo everything he has built. Fury on Sunday: In the early hours of a Sunday morning, lunatic pianist Vincent Radin escapes from an insane asylum and sets out on a revenge-fueled rampage. His aim is to find the two people who have hurt him most—his erstwhile manager and his lover’s new husband—and end their lives.
