Within the sphere of children's learning and play, the concept of robot and the application of actual robots are undergoing a dramatic expansion. Here the term "robot" refers to a growing range of interactive devices-including toys, pets, assistants to the disabled, and overtly educational tools-which are being used in ways that are expected to have profound and beneficial effects on how our children develop and grow. Robots for Kids: Exploring New Technologies for Learning opens with contributions from leading designers and researchers, each offering a unique perspective into the challenge of developing robots specifically for children. The second part is devoted to the stories of educators who work with children using these devices, exploring new applications and mapping their impact. Throughout the book, essays by children are included that discuss their first-hand experiences and ideas about robots. This is an engaging, entertaining, and insightful book for a broad audience, including HCI, AI, and robotics researchers in business and academia, new media and consumer product developers, robotics hobbyists, toy designers, teachers, and education researchers. * contributions by leaders in the fields of human-computer interaction and robotics * product development stories told by leading designers and researchers in organizations such as Microsoft, MIT Media Lab, Disney, and Sony * product application stories told by educators who are making robots a central part of kids' learning experiences, both in and out of the classroom * essays by kids-some, users of robotic technology, and others, designers in their own right

Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is a very broad and increasingly mature research field. It encompasses a wide variety of research topics, ranging from the study of different pedagogical approaches and teaching/learning strategies and techniques, to the application of advanced technologies in educational settings such as the use of different kinds of mobile devices, sensors and sensor networks to provide the technical foundation for context-aware, ubiquitous learning. The TEL community has also been exploring the use of artificial intelligence tools and techniques for the development of intelligent learning environments capable of adapting to learners’ needs and preferences and providing learners with personalized learning experience. Recognizing the potential of online social networks, social media, and web-based social software tools as learning platforms for online education, the TEL community has devoted significant time and effort into researching how these popular technologies could be combined with appropriate pedagogical approaches to make learning experience more engaging, satisfying, and successful. Among the most important results of these research endeavors are personal learning environments that allow learners to create mash-ups of diverse social software tools based on their own needs and preferences as well as to create and maintain their online learning networks. Undeniably, technological advancement is making education more accessible to an increasing number of people worldwide. To fully exploit the huge benefit the technology is offering, the TEL community is exploring effective approaches for adapting learning resources to address language, generation, and cultural specificities. Aiming to make learning accessible to all, the community has also focused on the development of solutions for learners with special needs. Finally, it should be noted that all the above mentioned research efforts of the TEL community are finding their applications in different learning contexts and domains, including formal education and informal learning, as well as workplace learning in small, medium, and large organizations. Since the scope of TEL research is constantly evolving, the above given overview of the current research efforts does not aim to be exhaustive by any means. Instead, its purpose is to give some insights into the breadth of research topics and challenges that this edited book aims to cover. The book comprises 14 chapters, which are topically organized into several sections. However, this division of chapters into sections is not strictly definitive as each of the chapters itself presents a comprehensive research work that often spans across diverse TEL areas and thus could be categorized into more than one section of the book.

Transforming Learning with New Technologies is designed to help current and futures teachers transform classrooms into technology-infused places of learning where adults and students work together as educational partners to understand and use technology to the best advantage. With its focus on the day-to-day realities of elementary and secondary schools, each chapter addresses the needs of future educators by providing thoughtful perspectives, instructional examples, descriptions of tools and apps, and technology-integrated lesson plans from across the curriculum for all grade levels, K through 12. The book emphasizes the new knowledge and expanded talents teachers and students who use technology need to have in order to develop in their future careers and social life—what the Partnership for 21st Century Skills calls the 3Rs (the changing content of the academic curriculum as schools move to include problem solving and inquiry learning in subject areas) and the 4Cs (the skills of critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity). It shows how teaching and learning with the 3Rs and 4Cs helps teachers using technology prepare, deliver, and assess lessons differently, while students use technology to think critically and creatively about all learning they do.
