National architectural magazine now in its fifteenth year, covering period-inspired design 1700–1950. Commissioned photographs show real homes, inspired by the past but livable. Historical and interpretive rooms are included; new construction, additions, and new kitchens and baths take their place along with restoration work. A feature on furniture appears in every issue. Product coverage is extensive. Experts offer advice for homeowners and designers on finishing, decorating, and furnishing period homes of every era. A garden feature, essays, archival material, events and exhibitions, and book reviews round out the editorial. Many readers claim the beautiful advertising—all of it design-related, no “lifestyle” ads—is as important to them as the articles.

emotional ROOMS the sensual interiors of benjamin noriega-ortiz Named by House Beautiful as one of "America's Most Brilliant Decorators" for ten consecutive years, Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz is recognized as one of the most stylish and influential of today's interior designers. His sensuous, glamorous, and ethereal work captures an unusual sense of openness and light through the use of color, materials, architecture, and the unexpected integration of fashion. Noriega-Ortiz has traveled the world to design spaces for such clients as rock superstar Lenny Kravitz, bestselling author Laura Esquivel, and celebrity photographer Mark Seliger. Now, with Emotional Rooms, he shares his process with anyone who may not have access to a high-end designer but wants a home or workspace that is at once beautiful and true to themselves. Noriega-Ortiz brings together in this book not only photographs of his interiors but personal images that will inspire and evoke the designer within us all. With stunning full-color photographs and clear, concise essays, he guides readers through the essential principles of design -- color, architecture, furniture, and lighting -- and gives advice on how homeowners can prevent common mistakes. He shows them how to break the rules, ignore trends and labels, stop pleasing others, and decorate their homes to reflect their own true desires. For those influenced by passing fads and fashions, Noriega-Ortiz's essential advice is: Emotion is always a better guide than intellect when it comes to creating a richly satisfying environment. Home truly is where the heart is, and this famous designer has what it takes to help readers put the heart back into their homes.

Interior designer Kishani Perera knows that good design is everywhere and at every price point. Mixing modern with vintage, and retail with custom, her eclectic interiors incorporate pieces from designer showrooms and Etsy alike to create spectacularly layered, vibrant homes. In Vintage Remix, Perera’s striking interiors serve as a guided tour through the stages of design, from deciding when to skimp or splurge to adding the finishing touches and unexpected elements of whimsy. Her mix-and-match philosophy will help readers discover and express their own tastes. Perera takes the intimidation out of blending styles, proving that pairing seemingly opposing pieces can strike a balance that is classically chic. Praise for Vintage Remix: “In her new book Vintage Remix: The Interiors of Kishani Perera, the Los Angeles designer proves that ‘eclectic’ does not have to be code for ‘messy’ or ‘absolute disarray.’ The homes she decorates mix high-end furnishings with eBay and Etsy finds, flea market pieces, and mass-market purchases for rooms that reflect an individual's personality with warmth and often a touch of glamour.” —Los Angeles Times

This fascinating collection provides a chronologically arranged set of case studies looking at how interior design has constantly redefined itself as a manifestation of culture, from the eighteenth-century to the present day. The book looks at the amateur activities of female 'home makers' in search of creative outlets and married couples seeking to modernise their homes as well as the contributions of early professional (female) 'interior decorators', and later, (male) 'interior designers'. It also considers the more anonymous role of commercial enterprises, such as hairdressing salons, ocean-going liners or modern offices as well as public institutions, such as hospitals or naval training establishments. Interior design and identity examines interior design in relation to the changing identities of its practitioners, its inhabitants and of the furnishings, focussing on the ways in which cultural values came to be embedded in the spaces which people inhabited and made their own. Issues relating to interiority, gender, and the relationship of the public sphere are also considered opening up a new level of design historical enquiry.

The design of the 1970s was distinguished by a strong confluence of creativity and functionalism in furnishing and decor. We already recognize many '70s furniture designs as icons of mid-century modernism-and the proof is the prices they command at fine furniture auctions today.Bony examines the works of international designers whose creations exemplify this period, from the ergonomically-focused designers working in America to the pure design movement in Scandinavia and design innovators in Italy led by Archizoom, Alchymia, and Gaetano Pesce. This indispensable reference book chronicles the period's interior design trends with over 200 photographs focusing on artistic and decorative innovations that created the first intelligent and informed design conversation between two continents.
