This book provides an introductory-level exploration of geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD), the principles governing air and water flows on large terrestrial scales. Physical principles are illustrated with the aid of the simplest existing models, and the computer methods are shown in juxtaposition with the equations to which they apply. It explores contemporary topics of climate dynamics and equatorial dynamics, including the Greenhouse Effect, global warming, and the El Nino Southern Oscillation. Combines both physical and numerical aspects of geophysical fluid dynamics into a single affordable volume Explores contemporary topics such as the Greenhouse Effect, global warming and the El Nino Southern Oscillation Biographical and historical notes at the ends of chapters trace the intellectual development of the field Recipient of the 2010 Wernaers Prize, awarded each year by the National Fund for Scientific Research of Belgium (FNR-FNRS).

Data Analysis Methods in Physical Oceanography, Third Edition is a practical reference to established and modern data analysis techniques in earth and ocean sciences. Its five major sections address data acquisition and recording, data processing and presentation, statistical methods and error handling, analysis of spatial data fields, and time series analysis methods. The revised Third Edition updates the instrumentation used to collect and analyze physical oceanic data and adds new techniques including Kalman Filtering. Additionally, the sections covering spectral, wavelet, and harmonic analysis techniques are completely revised since these techniques have attracted significant attention over the past decade as more accurate and efficient data gathering and analysis methods. Completely updated and revised to reflect new filtering techniques and major updating of the instrumentation used to collect and analyze data Co-authored by scientists from academe and industry, both of whom have more than 30 years of experience in oceanographic research and field work Significant revision of sections covering spectral, wavelet, and harmonic analysis techniques Examples address typical data analysis problems yet provide the reader with formulaic “recipes for working with their own data Significant expansion to 350 figures, illustrations, diagrams and photos

This book is the first of a new sequence of Volumes of "The Sea" to be edited by Dr. Robinson and a new, distinguished editorial board. As oceanography has matured over the last decades, the previously separate interests of chemical, biological and physical oceanographers have converged, and these volumes will reflect the change in attitude in oceanography to a solid interdisciplinary approach. Other volumes planned for publication in 1998 and 1999 will include works on "Ocean History", "Biological-Physical Interactions in the Ocean", "Oceans and Climate", and "Ocean Science of Fisheries".

The Sea is a prestigious series with a history going back to the classic three volume treatise published by Wiley in 1962-63. Now, under the leadership of Allan Robinson, the series is again being extended with five new volumes currently planned that emphasizing the interaction of physical, chemical and biological oceanography. "Coastal Ocean Phenomena" is the first of these new volumes, and it deals with the general principles governing ocean phenomena in regions of shallower water near land. Processes such as tidal effects, global sea level changes, biological productivity, and sediment transport are analyzed. Models and methods are emphasized, including remote sensing, models of coastal ocean circulation, and data acquisition. Volume 10 presents the general principles, and volume 11 is organized geographically to presents the results of 35 of regional studies: Eastern North America, the Caribbean, the North Sea and Baltic, the Mediterranean Sea, and so forth. Volume 10 is a readable and systematic introduction to coastal oceanography that is suitable for use with college courses, while volume 11 is a much larger reference work. Note that volumes 10 and 11 are available together as a set (ISBN 0471-11543-6, tent $175.00.).
