Brian Jungen has been celebrated for transforming basic consumer items into evocative objects, rich with humor and meaning. A member of the Doig River band of the Dunne-za Nation, he uses unexpected materials to challenge the influence ethnography has in forming cultural identity. The first survey of his work, the book features essays from respected curators, plus an interview with the artist himself, which set his work in context. Accompanying the text are spectacular reproductions of some of Jungen's most provocative pieces, from early sculptures to recent large-scale installations.

When Brahms was about twenty years old, he began to copy into the notebook he always carried, long or short passages he had read and wished to keep. This practice belongs to an old tradition followed by Erasmus, Ben Jonson, and John Milton, to mention but three examples. Four of Brahms' notebooks have been preserved. In 1909, twelve years after the composer's death, the German music critic, author, and scholar Carl Krebs collected and published these notebooks in one small, handsome volume. The limited edition was soon exhausted and the collection was never reprinted. Krebs was aided in writing his informative Preface by the author Max Kalbeck, the first volume of whose monumental biography of Brahms had appeared in 1903. Kalbeck calls attention to these notebooks, convinced that they offer the key to Brahms' innermost being. The present volume, translated and introduced by Agnes Eisenberger, provides the original German with its English equivalent on facing pages. The annotations and descriptions of the various authors are by Siegmund Levarie.

The authors - an architectural historian (Niels Gutschow) and an indologist (Axel Michaels) - are presenting the second part of a trilogy of studies of life-cycle rituals in Nepal, carried out under the auspices of the Collaborative Research Centre "Dynamics of Ritual." The initiation of boys and girls of both Hindus and Buddhists of the ethnic community of Newars in the Kathmandu Valley are documented. The first part of the book presents elements of Newar rituals, the spatial background of Bhaktapur and the hierarchy of ritual specialists - illustrated by 21 maps. The second part documents with detailed descriptions the . rst feeding of solid food, birthday rituals, and pre-puberty rituals like the first shaving of the hair, the boy's initiation with the loincloth (in Buddhist and Hindu contexts), the girl's marriage with the bel fruit and the girl's seclusion. One girl's marriage (Ihi) and three boy's initiations (Kaytapuja) are documented on a DVD. The third part presents the textual tradition: local handbooks and manuals used by the Brahmin priest to guide the rituals. Two of these texts are edited and translated to demonstrate the function of such texts in a variety of contexts.
