Former defense attorney Darren Street is desperately trying to put his life back together after spending two years in a maximum-security prison for a murder he didn’t commit. He’s rebuilding his law practice, reconnecting with his son, and falling more deeply in love with his girlfriend, fellow attorney Grace Alexander. But the past casts a long shadow, and for Street, there’s no outrunning it. Tormented by nightmares and violent mood swings, Street is seeking treatment for PTSD when a new trauma shakes his world: his mother is killed in an explosion, but the police believe Street was the intended target. Payback from an old enemy, or the calling card of a deadly new foe? Whoever’s behind it, Street begins to lose his grip on reality and decides to take matters in his own hands. And the law won’t stop him from revenge. Justice has a new name: Darren Street.

When teenagers scuffle during a basketball game, they are typically benched. But when Will got into it on the court, he and his rival were sprayed in the face at close range by a chemical similar to Mace, denied a shower for twenty-four hours, and then locked in solitary confinement for a month. One in three American children will be arrested by the time they are twenty-three, and many will spend time locked inside horrific detention centers that defy everything we know about how to rehabilitate young offenders. In a clear-eyed indictment of the juvenile justice system run amok, award-winning journalist Nell Bernstein shows that there is no right way to lock up a child. The very act of isolation denies delinquent children the thing that is most essential to their growth and rehabilitation: positive relationships with caring adults. Bernstein introduces us to youth across the nation who have suffered violence and psychological torture at the hands of the state. She presents these youths all as fully realized people, not victims. As they describe in their own voices their fight to maintain their humanity and protect their individuality in environments that would deny both, these young people offer a hopeful alternative to the doomed effort to reform a system that should only be dismantled. Burning Down the House is a clarion call to shut down our nation’s brutal and counterproductive juvenile prisons and bring our children home.

Pacifist Mennonite social worker Nora Martin is on the verge of opening a residential facility for first-time offenders. After years of planning, she'll finally be able to rescue young men from the violence of prison...or what has been their only other option, the violence of the military. But then a stranger in camouflage and combat boots marches through her front door and claims to own her house. And he's not interested in letting Nora change it. Who is Petty Officer Jacob Schwartz, and why does no one in the close-knit town of French Lick, Indiana want to acknowledge that he exists? What are they hiding? What had seemed like a safe community is now full of secrets and old heartaches, and Nora is caught in the dangerous middle. Her only ally is her best friend, FBI agent Alicia Yu (who readers first met in Glitter and Sorrow), but even Alicia can't protect her from the way Nora's heart races every time Jacob's in the room. Can she trust a man in uniform? Nora and Jacob's choices have taken them down different paths, but God may still show them a safe way back.

Scapegoat--The Scales of Justice Burning is a book about my life and how my name was used to assist a large corporation avoid corporate responsibility and the consequences of a bad decision. the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that their decision was in bad faith and upheld a lower court judgment of one million dollars against Pilot Insurance Company. to the surprise of the author, they also named him as a catalyst in creating a train of thought with the decision makers of Pilot Insurance Company and also aligned him as one of the decision makers. This book is the author's attempt to prove with evidence compiled from the very court where he was never called to testify, that he was not a decision maker who made the decision to deny their insured's claim, and did not evoke a train of thought as described in the Supreme Court of Canada ruling. Scapegoat--The Scales of Justice Burning is also about the implications of abusing a person's name as if it carries no meaning or purpose. As exemplified by the description of some of my own ancestors, there is clearly more meaning in a person's name than the disrespect shown by the Supreme Court of Canada. A court that truly believes that its status is greater than the citizens it serves and the government that appoints Supreme Court of Canada Justices. Scapegoat--The Scales of Justice Burning has been a crusade that restores democratic rights for individual citizens of Canada and to confront those who would burn down the very foundation of justice. Natural justice has not been served. It is uncanny that in a democratic society, there would be no mechanism in place for judicial review and correction to address an injustice whereby one's reputation is damaged by comments made by a high court.

An affecting testimonial to the bond between American soldiers in Vietnam and their canine helpers, A Soldier's Best Friend is veteran John C. Burnam's account of his tenure as a scout dog handler patrolling the jungles of Vietnam with his German shepherd, Clipper, at his side. There were 10,000 soldiers in Vietnam like Burnam, accompanied by these intelligent, adaptable scout dogs. Between hazardous missions, the dogs were loving, playful friends who shared the lives of their human squadmates, while in the combat zone they were all business. Routinely braving danger, the canines searched for injured GIs, probed for potentially lethal booby traps, located underground weapons caches and warned of approaching enemy attacks and ambushes. So valuable was the dogs' service that the Viet Cong offered a hefty bounty for their lives. Despite their heroism, many of these dogs were abandoned at the conflict's end, left to fend for themselves. Since the 1990s, this book has had two runs as a self-published book, and one as a trade title, with all three of these print runs selling out.

In 1947, James Hickman shot and killed the landlord he believed was responsible for a tragic fire which took the lives of four of his children on Chicago's west side. Prosecutors sought a death sentence for Hickman, but a vibrant defence campaign - which included the famous actress Tallulah Bankhead and acclaimed artist Ben Shahn - exposed how poverty and racism led to his crime and ultimately helped Hickman win his freedom. In the best tradition of true crime drama and narrative non-fiction, Joe Allen unearths the compelling story of that campaign.
