"The relationships between law, science, and society are central to a diverse range of practical, ethical and theoretical issues. With an increasing emphasis on the fluidity and uncertainty of each of these areas, the analysis of their intersection(s) has become complex. This book examines the interface between studies of these topics from the socio-legal studies and science and technology studies (STS) perspectives. The scholars gathered here interrogate the joint roles of law and science in the construction and stabilization of socio-technical networks, objects, and standards, as well as their place in the production of contemporary social realities and subjectivities. Accordingly, scholars have borrowed from a range of disciplines and case studies to analyse not only how such intersections materialize, but also how and from where they should be approached. Knowledge, Technology and Law illustrates how these complex and multifaceted links between scientific knowledge, material artefacts, practices and identities can be charted. This volume presents original dialogues on this emerging field and will therefore be of great interest to those researching the intersections of law, science, and society"--

Disasters raise serious challenges for contemporary legal orders: they demand significant management, but usually amidst massive disruption to the normal functioning of state authority and society. When dealing with disasters, law has traditionally focused on contingency planning and recovery. More recently, however, ‘resilience’ has emerged as a key concept in effective disaster management policies and strategies, aiming at minimising the impact of events, so that the normal functioning of society and the state can be preserved. This book analyses the contribution of law to resilience building by looking at law’s role in the different phases of the disaster regulatory process: risk assessment, risk management, emergency intervention, and recovery. More specifically, it addresses how law can effectively contribute to resilience-oriented distaster management policies, and what legal instruments can support effective resilience-building.

The Regulation of Animal Health and Welfare draws on the research of scientists, lawyers, economists and political scientists to address the current and future regulatory problems posed by the issues of animal health and disease. Recent events such as the outbreak of mad cow disease, epidemics of foot and mouth disease, concerns about bluetongue in sheep, and the entry into the food chain of the offspring of cloned cattle, have heightened awareness of the issues of regulation in animal disease and welfare. This book critically appraises the existing regulatory institutions and guiding principles of how best to maintain animal health in the context of social change and a developing global economy. Addressing considerations of sound science, the role of risk management, and the allocation of responsibilities, it also takes up the theoretical and practical challenges which here – and elsewhere – attend the co-operation of scientists, social scientists, lawyers and policy makers. Indeed, the collaboration of scientists and social scientists in determined and regulatory contexts such as that of animal disease is an issue of ever-increasing importance. This book will be of considerable value to those with interests in this issue, as well as those concerned with the law and policy relating to animal health and welfare.

Technologies like CRISPR and gene drives are ushering in a new era of genetic engineering, wherein the technical means to modify DNA are cheaper, faster, more accurate, more widely accessible, and with more far-reaching effects than ever before. These cutting-edge technologies raise legal, ethical, cultural, and ecological questions that are so broad and consequential for both human and other-than-human life that they can be difficult to grasp. What is clear, however, is that the power to directly alter not just a singular form of life but also the genetics of entire species and thus the composition of ecosystems is currently both inadequately regulated and undertheorized. In Gene Editing, Law, and the Environment, distinguished scholars from law, the life sciences, philosophy, environmental studies, science and technology studies, animal health, and religious studies examine what is at stake with these new biotechnologies for life and law, both human and beyond.

The New York Times of December 7. 2008 had a wonderful piece by business columnist Janet Rae-Dupree. entitled "Teamwork the true mother of invention". She started her article thus: "Despite the enduring myth of the lone genius. Innovation does not take place in isolation". "The best innovations occur when you have networks of people with diverse backgrounds gathering around a problem." said Robert Fishkin. President and Chief Executive of Reframeit. In fact these were the same basic ideas Henri Eisendrath and Jean Paul Van Bendegem had when at the end of the last century. they initiated a series of interdisciplinary study groups and workshops for young researchers at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Once a month, these interdisciplinary seminars brought together VUB professors who came to present the aims, importance. Successes and difficulties of the work their research teams were engaged in. The series comprised eleven contributions, providing a balanced image of research done at the VUB. The titles of these contributions (see contents) clearly reveal that the subjects presented originate from very different fields of study. The discussions very often involved not just specialists in the specific research activity. but also Ph.D. students from other fields. The original intention of the editors of this volume was not merely to present the contributions by the scientists themselves. but also to summarize the discussions that followed However, this proved to be a formidable task and severely risked resulting in a skewed summary that would not do justice to the speaker or the audience present. The editors hope that this book will serve as a catalyst for (young) scientists to understand the importance of teamwork and to enjoy its benefits.

This collection of essays examines the multi-faceted roles of experts and expertise in and around contemporary legal and regulatory cultures. The essays illustrate the complexity intrinsic to the production and use of expert knowledge, particularly during transition from specialist communities to other domains such as policy formulation, regulatory standard setting and litigation. Several themes pervade the collection. These include the need to recognize that: expert knowledge and opinion is often complex, controversial and contested; there are no simple criteria for resolving disagreements between experts; appeals to 'objectivity' and 'impartiality' tend to be rhetorical rather than analytical; contests in expertise are frequently episodes in larger campaigns; there are many different models of expertise and knowledge; processes designed to deal with expert knowledge are unavoidably political; questions around who is an expert and what should count as expertise are not always self-evident; and the evidence rarely 'speaks for itself'.

Taking the viewpoint that experts are consulted when there is something important at stake for an individual, a group, or society at large, this volume explores expertise as a relational concept. In order to be culturally comparative, this volume includes examples and discussions of experts in different countries and even in different time periods. The topics include the roles of political experts, scientific experts, medical experts, and legal experts.
